The name Kai means sea in Hawaiian. I like it since baby came about on a trip to Hawaii. Opinions? Middle name ideas or other Hawaiian names that aren't too hard to pronounce?
The only reason why I'm not a fan of the name is because everyone is using it now. If you don't mind the popularity of the name (or if it isn't popular in your area), then go for it. Also. In general, it just isn't my style.
It's one of those names that I only like for people who are actually of that particular decent/origin/ethnicity/etc. I like the name but not for general usage by anyone. Just my opinion!
It is DS1's middle name. My husband is Hawaiian. I believe that while no one group can claim a name, I am a little irrationally butthurt that it's popular for anyone now and not just a Hawaiian thing! (Although I believe it also has Japanese and maybe Danish roots? Like I said, I have no real case!)
Even though "we" are Hawaiian with a super Hawaiian last name, I felt funny strapping on a super ethnic name to my kiddos since I'm white as can be, so the mn spot was great for us.
I also loved Keanu, Koa, Makoa, Kaipo, Kona, and Kea for boys names. (And DS2 mn is Lio, the Hawaiian variation of Leo, my grandpas name). I tried to avoid any with the okina (looks like an apostrophe) since I could see it easily being omitted, thus changing the meaning of the name (my last name is a perfect example, it lost the okina somewhere along the way but there are many references to it on the Big Island and all use it!)
I love the name Kai. In fact, it is my soon-to-be son's name (Kai Michael). Please note, Kai does NOT only originate from Hawaii. It also has roots in Germany Scandinavia, and many others as well. Besides meaning "Ocean," it means "Keeper of the Keys". It's a quite popular name in Australia, Germany, and Norway.
It's a nice name. I like it most if it's part of your heritage. My friend is from Hawaii and they named their son that, I think it's awsome. At the same time I wouldn't consider it for my own kids.
In NZ Kai = food in Te Reo (our native language) and I can't get past that. I do feel it is fresh, bright and fun though. I can understand it's appeal.
Ok so if we would go with Kai how does Kai Elias sound? Father in laws nickname is Eli but brother in law has already used Eli as a middle name for his son. Would it be bad to use Elias in this situation?
