I am almost 23w pregnant. I've been feeding a stray cat for about 2 weeks, never any physical contact. Yesterday he rubbed against me and I pet his back. Immediately washed hands after. Now I'm paranoid something could have been transmitted. Thoughts?
Re: Toxoplasmosis
It seems very unlikely. Did the cat show signs of being sick?
I am 22 weeks and on Friday came down with severe flu-like symptoms 2 weeks after we adopted a kitten and I had been changing the kitty litter. I was tested previously for toxoplasmosis before and have never contracted it, which means if I contract it for the first time while pregnant, it could affect the baby. I'm going in for a lab today to be tested.
If you're still concerned, call your OB and see what they recommend. That's what I did.
Since you washed your hands immediately afterward and hat minimal contact with the stray cat, your risk is significantly reduced. To further ease your mind, consider discussing your concerns with your healthcare provider: they can provide tailored advice and help you feel more secure.
Remember that staying informed and taking preventative measures are key during this time. If you're still worried about the stray cat's health or potential exposure risks, it might also be a good idea to limit direct contact in the future until you can ensure it's safe.
