Gestational Hypertension

i searched at the bottom of this board and didn't find anything, so hopefully this isn't a repeat. So on Monday I went to the doctor and my blood pressure was high. Which it has been slowly creeping up every appointment. Two weeks ago they sent me to l&d to be monitored and of course when I was there it was totally normal... Anyways so on Monday at my 34 week appointment my doc wanted to do the GBS which they normally do at 36 weeks. She said she had a feeling I wouldn't be pregnant much longer. So Tuesday I was feeling off got my BP checked again, and it was even higher than the day before. So they put me on bedrest. Womp womp! I'm just curious though, I have had several bp readings over 145/90-158/99 the last week and a half. Of course I was totally blind sided and didn't even ask the doctor what the plan was or why induction was like a sure thing! Even when she checked me and said I was dilated to a 1 and 80% and that it was good I had made some progress for when they induce. Say what? They never had said anything about induction at any other appointment. Of course I'll talk to her on Monday, but I'm curious, anyone else had several high bp's and perfect 24 hr urine and labs? What is your doctor recommending, or what are they currently having you do? I'm a ftm so just curious if anyone else is in the same boat. Obviously I know that every person/doc is different and I will ask my doc everything on Monday just wanted some input from someone who had experienced this.

Re: Gestational Hypertension

  • Hi! I posted yesterday about pre-eclampsia and I'm going through something similar but I have no suggestions or advice just sending positive thoughts! My bp is staying elevated so I'm getting re-evaluated this morning it's just a wait and see at this point! Hope all goes well for you and your little one

  • I'm at 33 weeks and have been on bedrest for 2 weeks due to gestational hypertension. My blood work and 24 hour urine have all come back fine but was admitted to labor and delivery twice in one week due to high BP before being put on bedrest.

They usually induce by 37 weeks with high BP because blood pressure normally tends to increase anyway in the last few weeks of pregnancy which is bad if BP is already high. If it's too high you put yourself at risk of seizures and strokes so they will go ahead and induce to reduce that risk.

I'm seeing the doctor twice a week now. I do an NST on Tuesdays with my primary OB and then on Fridays I see a perinatologist for an ultrasound.
  • Hmmm my BP was borderline high during the first 2 trimesters. Then we.got around week 31, and my BP shot up to 151/100. They put me on blood pressure meds had me to an NST, and preclamcia labs and had me on modified bed rest for a weekend. Then I went back in on Monday everything was ok. but I have been going for weekly NSTs and visits since. I have not been told to stop working either. Just yesterday I went for my NST and appointment. And my BP was back up to 150/100 so the rechecked it after the NST and it did come back down to 134/92. but they had me redo labs. I am waiting to hear the results of those. I already have an ultrasound, NST, and appointment for next Thursday. So we will see. Sorry for all the details. But I am 35weeks and still no one has mentioned induction to me. All I have heard was last week (when everything looked good) was that they don't expect I will still be pregnant on my due date. But it sounded more like she will make her way down before then. I also have gestational diabetes as well but that is controlled with diet. It really is different for all people and practices. So I guess I will send you well wishes. And say try not to stress. Cause that just makes your BP higher. Sending good thoughts!
  • I started with high blood pressure at 32 weeks and was admitted to L&D for 3 days. All labs and urine came back normal. So now I'm on blood pressure medication and nst twice a week and weekly MD appts. Most likely I will be induced at 37 weeks but she may try to push me to 38 weeks if everything stays stable. But blood pressure can spike fast. Thoughts with you!
  • Thanks for all the responses. I had my BP checked again today and again it is rising was 169/110. This time my doc put me on labetelol and still on bed rest. I guess at this point, it is a waiting game to see. I am doing weekly NST's and appointments now. I just hope this little guy is okay and we can hold on till he is healthy enough! Good luck to everyone else who is dealing with this!
