2nd Trimester

Echogenic focus?? 24 weeks

ok ..... I had an anatomy scan my last visit 3 weeks ago. Everything checked out fine. My next appointment is this coming Monday. Today. I had a spill and landed a trip to l&d to get checked out bc of bleeding.... Everything was fine. Discovered placenta is low. 1cm from cervix & the sono specialist checking on baby saw this bright spot in our little boys heart chamber. Called it a echogenic focus.... He explained to my husband and I this is what 3-5% of babies have. Sometimes they go away. And sometimes it's a marker for Down's syndrome, so he called my dr just to give us some odds and I had actually opted not to have the prenatal blood work for this kind of thing. (OF COURSE!!) so there was really nothing else to go by. I'm confused on why this wasn't seen 3 weeks ago.......... I'm trying to stay calm bc I have an appointment Monday with my dr that was a scheduled sonogram anyway. So I'm hoping dr will check it out and explain that it wasn't there before ....... Or give me some sort of explanation as to why it just now showed up.........
Another issue that makes me rethink for a minute. I called to reschedule my apt and they had actually told me this next one was a sono and I'm down for a sono from here on out. I'm 24 weeks and dr had only mentioned doing a few extra Sonos to check babies progress bc I've had my 2 smallest ones so close together. I had a baby girl 9/23/14 and I'm due 9/20/15... So that is confusing to me as well why she said we would do a sono from here on out. I'm almost thinking they saw the spot? And didn't say anything ?!

Who's wxperienced this spot? Or other markers ??

Re: Echogenic focus?? 24 weeks

  • DS1 had an echogenic cardiac focus on his heart at 19w. My doctor and our genetic counselor (we were seeing a GC for another issue) were not concerned at all. Apparently these bright spots are very common. In the Asian population, something like 30% of fetuses have them. While I am not Asian, it helped me understand what a non-issue this is in the absence of any other risk factors. I asked our dr what the follow-up was and he said nothing. He said if this was the old days when he could withhold info, he wouldn't even mention the spot because it is *that* not concerning to him. His phrasing was weird, but I appreciated his sentiment. Because of another issue, I ended up getting a second anatomy scan at 26 weeks and they saw that the spot had already resolved itself. LO was born perfectly healthy.
