un-paper towel ?

this is probably a stupid ? but, for those who use paper towel alternatives, what do you cover food with in the microwave?  for instance when you are defrosting a bagel.

I personally don't know that I would use anything when defrosting a bagel.  We are trying to use fewer paper towels and I got a bunch of cheap cloth napkins to use for everyday.  You could probably throw one of those over whatever in the microwave.

  • We have one of those plastic covers that are specifically made for the microwave.  If we're reheating something that's messy, we use that.  If I was defrosting a bagel, I wouldn't use anything.

  • I usually use a plate or a bowl to cover messy foods in the microwave.
  • I would defrost a bagel in the toaster.  I normally don't cover things in the microwave unless it's something likely to make a big mess, then I just use a cloth napkin or something.  I'm really good about wiping out the microwave often.

Ditto! bread in the microwave at any power is yuck!

I do buy paper towels but one roll probably lasts us more than a month because I buy the select a size and use them extremely sparingly.

  • We have a cover we use- from Target- for messy things. I also use the flipped plate on top trick. But, for a bagel- I wouldn't use anything. It isn't going to splatter.

Whatever you go with, reconsider paper towels in the microwave. It can burst into flames. Microwaves heat by warming the water in things. When the water is all evaporated out, that is when fires start. Paper towels don't have much moisture in them to begin with, so they are a fire hazard in the microwave.
