Adoption

Korea

I have been researching various countries, and am interested in learning more about the Korean program. ?Do you have any good resources? ?I will check the yahoo groups. ?Any other reputable sites or sources??

Also, I saw a reference to new regulations in 2007. ?Does anyone know what those were or how they impact the process?

Re: Korea

  • www.adoptkorea.com is a great resource. ?I started the process in April of '08. ?I'm not entirely sure of what the 2007 regulations brought, other than the fact that the children have up until 5months of age to be adopted within Korea. ?Which means that you will not receive a referral of a child under the age of 5 months. ?

Korea is also setting their goal to end international adoption by 2012. ?Whether or not this will happen, I don't know, but that is the goal. ?In response to this, my agency has stopped receiving applications for families unless they are Korean or have adopted from Korea before (as of October '07). ?My agency is Holt btw. ?I don't think other agencies have done that though. ?

Our wait time was quoted to be about 21-24 months from application to home. ?The way things are currently going we expect a referral around the end of summer and travel towards the end of '09 or beginning of '10. ?So I guess the lower estimation of time. ?That is with fingers, toes, legs and arms all crossed. ?LOL. ?

We personally chose Korea based on the foster care program, health of the children, and stability and reputation of the program. ?We looked into domestic as well but my heart just kept calling out to Korea. ?

Best of luck to you! ??

  • Thank you for the info. ?I will look at that site. ?The foster system is what attracted me to the country. ?I also like the age of the children. ?Good luck to you as well!

  • No problem. ?Let me know if you have any more questions. ?Your little one is adorable. ?My dd was born at 26 weeks. ?Proud Preemie Moms Unite! LOL. ?

?Hahaha.... ?Congrats on your 26 weeker. ?I thought a 31 weeker was tough. It is amazing how strong those preemies are.

When did you start your process for Korea? ?I am really bummed about the 2012 thing. ?Does it even make sense to start now? ?I would hate to be almost there, and then have Korea close the doors. ?I guess that is the risk with any country, but it seems like the writing might be on the wall for this one. :(

Wow, that is crazy fast. ?Did you start everything in October (application / homestudy / etc), or is that when you sent your paperwork to Korea? ?Are you the nestie who posted the story about your referral a couple weeks ago? ?

I am in Denver. ?Does your agency place in Colorado? ?

  • Yes that was me ;)  Sorry they do not work in Colorado, but I highly recommend the Holt forums to find out more about Korea.
