Northern California Babies

CPMC vs. Day One vs. McMoyler Method

I'm starting to look into classes I need to take (birthing, breastfeeding, infant care) and these are the three my doctor recommended I look into:

1) the classes through our hospital - CPMC in SF

2) Day One...might be convenient if I need the other services after the baby is born since I live in Lafayette and there's a Day One in WC

3) McMoyler Method - looks impressive and I have a co-worker who speaks highly of it

Any thoughts ladies?

Re: CPMC vs. Day One vs. McMoyler Method

  • hi! we took ours at UCSF and i think the girl does the CPMC ones too....it was fabulous. The big thing that i liked about our class was that each session was on a different specific topic---medication options, non-medical approaches, c-section/complications, etc. it was not overwelming at all and was very informative. GL!

  • Obviously I haven't been thrugh them, but we actually looked at all 3 ourselves!  We chose to go with CPMC.  Our reasons: 1.) day one was expensive - total up the same classes and it was more than CPMC 2.) Mcmoyler - a friend recommended it but hadn't taken it herself. I couldnt find anyone with first hand experience. 3.) CPMC - we got the package that included the childbirth prep; breastfeeding; newborn care and it came with 1 session with a lactation consultant after birth (apparently CPMC charges $125 for this service if you get it in the hospital) and a gc for a 1 hour prenatal massage. It totaled to a little over $400, but I got all my first choice dates and was confirmed yesterday.  The LC and massage we honestly selling points for me.

Have you been to the Newborn Connections at CPMC?  They had the calendar for '09 and the the packages they offer.  I couldn't find that info online so it helped to go.

  • The birthing classes might be a good one to take through your hospital--they will probably give a lot of good information about what your delivery will be like at that specific place in addition to techniques, etc. The teachers are often L&D nurses from the hospitals with great "insider" info. This was our experience at UCSF anyway.

I really like Day One's commitment to breastfeeding--I probably would've gotten more out of a bf class there than our hospital one, which was really general. In any case, you will learn more as you go with bf than from a class, imo. Especially with the help of a great LC.

  • We took 3 (childbirth prep, bf and newborn care) through CPMC.  I liked the prep class the best.  It showed a few different labor scenarios and went trough a bunch of labor techniques.  BFing was ok - I think having the nurses/lactation consultants in the hospital helped more.  The newborn class was good for DH and was a good overview on what to expect (I am not a big book reader in the baby dept.) so this helped.  They go through things to expect like baby acne, lazy eyes, etc - things that may worry you if you didn't know better.

I haven't visited them directly but I've been on the website. I found where they have the course descriptions and the schedules, etc but they haven't updated it for 2009 so that has been frustrating to figure out when the actual classes are.

That's nice about LC and massage!  Part of my decision relies on the fact that I'm delivering at CPMC in SF but I actually live in Lafayette so post-birth, CPMC LConsultants aren't as convenient for me.

Hi Nanda!! I was just asking Lindsy how you were doing.  How are you?

Thanks for the info! That's good to know you had the CPMC instructor and liked her...

  • Jamie, if you do go the CPMC route/Newborn Connections...one regret I have is not having an LC come to the house after I got home.  I think it's $100-150.  I wish I would have done it right away...if would have been a nice thing to do in the privacy of my own home.  Especially when you are just a few days PP, it would have really helped.  I thought C was latching right - she was while we were in the hospital, but now I don't think she was.  Just something to consider.

I have spoken with a few of the LCs on the phone over the last few months and they have been very helpful.

I was frustrated they didn't have the 2009 stuff online too. I was just in Laurel Village last weekend so I popped in.   The LC consultation I got is one while you are in the hosipital, not after. Not sure if that helps at all. Good luck with your search! Anyway you go I don't think you can go wrong.

Hey Jaime (you are "JaIMe" right?)!

Thanks for the advice.  I didn't realize that they provide LC services to come to your home.  CPMC does that? I bet they won't for me though since we don't live in the city anymore...

    Yep!

Here's the link.  It's worth a call (doesn't say how far they will travel).  I really wish I had done it.  Good luck!
