Sunny side up

My midwife said she thinks the baby is sunny side up. This is my 2nd baby. This happened to anyone else? I'm nervous this could mean a c section is more likely. She explained I should let my belly 'hang' more. Has this or anything else worked for anyone to flip the baby? Thank you!!!

Re: Sunny side up

  • Any position that gets the heaviest part of the baby (their back) to rotate forward. Use gravity- hands and knees, yoga ball and lean forward, sleep on either side with top leg up & bent with belly pointing to bed (hope that makes sense). Good luck! You've got time.

  • Mine is sunny side up too. I spent hours in the pool today tummy down with my feet in a float and resting my head on the side of the pool. Midwife (who was at the pool with me ) said that was an excellent way to get the baby to turn around. You can still have a vaginal birth of your baby does not turn especially if you have already had one. Just avoid being in your back. The baby can also turn while you're in labor. There is lots of information on the internet on ways to encourage your baby to turn.
  • Me too :-( went from transverse to sunny side up. Worried I'll have a rough labor if she doesn't adjust.
  • Happened to me with my last right before my due date. Placed a big bag of ice on the top of my belly (assuming where baby's head was) and she turned down...who really wants a bag of cold ice on their head. Haha. But you still have time.
  • My first was born posterior due to the epidural (that didn't work, but flipped him) if my doctor had showed up earlier we would have tried to flip him, but she got a speeding ticket on the way to the hospital :/
  • Kid was sunny side up when I got to the hospital after my water broke. One of the nurses used a trick she swore always worked to flip him so I wouldn't have to have a c-section. I had to lay on my side with a leg up on the hospital tray. Seemed crazy to me, but it worked and he flipped and I delivered normally.

My first flipped to sunny side up from the time I got to the hospital until I started pushing so no one really knew - it took 3 hours to push her out but she did come out vaginally with no vacuum or anything. Not pleasant obviously but it was fine. I know a few others where that happened as well.

But yes, I think on spinningbabies.com there are some tips to get a sunny side up baby to turn. Just know they don't always stay there.
  • Aw, your LO may still have plenty of time to flip, and even if he/she doesn't, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a c-section. In fact, they may be able to flip them in the hospital.

But my midwife said the same thing about letting the belly hang, and suggested I stretch using a birthing ball (yoga ball). All I really do is essentially get in my hands and knees, with the ball in front of me, and then wrap my arms and rest my head on the ball, letting my tummy hang in between. You can then either gently rock from side to side, or forward and back, and gravity does the rest of the work :)

Praying for the best outcome for you!
  • My DD was born vaginally sunny side up.
  • My girl was OP for a while. I asked my Webster Certified chiropractor to focus on changing her position. After just one adjustment with that being the goal she turned into optimal positioning and has been there since. Definitely find a chiro experienced and knowledgable in this area

Had this with my first. Definitely made for a harder labor. (Think of the head riding your spine) Very intense back labor. The tried flipping him in the hospital by having me lay on my side and then they would push on my stomach while I was having a contraction to get him to flip. He ended up coming out ear up. So don't let this get you down, and font for a second let yourself think that this means you have to have a c section. Try to relax and trust that your body is amazing and was made to do this!!
