Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

18 month age gap help!

So I'm pregnant with #2 and I will have 18 months between them.

Anyone else have this?

I thought I'd just be able to reuse everything but I think there are some things I'll need 2 of.

I am thinking I'll need a second crib and high chair (or at least booster seat). Double stroller (thankfully I thought that part through and have a city select and double chariot). Anything else I may need 2 of?

Any advice on when to potty train #1? When to go to toddler bed? How to keep from going crazy day to day on maternity leave?

Re: 18 month age gap help!

  • Mine are 24 mos and 14 mos apart. We have 2 FP booster seats in both our kitchen and dining room. We have 2 cribs. My rule on cribs is to keep them in until they climb out and are not safe. DD1 was not coordinated, but able to get out and fell at 22 mos. DS was climbing out at 15 mos, but never got hurt-we transitioned to toddler bed at 2 yrs. I potty trained DD1 at 26 mos, when DS was 6 was old. It was easy because she was used to using the toilet since 6 mos for pooping. I have yet to start with DS (2 yrs), but he often requests to go potty on the toilet at diaper changes and does go, so when he requests more often, I'll try undies with him.
Double stroller for sure, along with a good carrier. I found myself rather overwhelmed with #2 and was so happy that I had made at least a month's worth of freezer meals. Families from our church also brought meals a few times.
As for not going crazy, get out of the house as much as you can. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Sometimes I'd have my FIL come hold a fussy baby just so I could take a shower.
I also scoured Pinterest for busy bags and made a TON of them for DD1 to do while I was nursing DS. A lot of people recommended doing reading time for toddlers when nursing, but all of my babies required quiet when nursing.

  • I'm due with #2 in August and they will be 17 months apart. We are going to get a second crib and move my DD into a bigger room. We won't focus on potty training until she is ready. Right now she is 15 months and telling me when she is going to poop, but until this is constant I won't even think about potty training. From what I understand it is best not to overwhelm your first child with things like a toddler bed and potty training with a new baby in the house. Just try to remember to work with your first child's timeline. I am sure we will just know when they're ready for these transitions, like all other things motherhood related.

Aaaaaand I have just found myself in this boat.  There will be 21 months between my second and our new baby #3 (come March).  We got rid of so much of our stuff because this was supposed to be the last baby but surprise!!  And we're building a 3 bedroom house (we were banking on only two kids when we started building) so our first and second will share a room.  But the bed situation will be interesting since my youngest is obviously still in a crib at 1-year.  And the stroller situation.  And the car seat situation.

  • Hi,

I have an 11.5 month age gap and now they are 12 minths and 23 months and honestly its great!! They have a built in playmate and yes they fight and bicker over toys but they kiss and cuddle and share and laugh and play :):)

I biught a second hand double buggy just incase I didnt like it and that saved me some money.
I have one toddler in a cot and one in a travel cot (with a proper mattress) my eldest will be going in a proper bed soon so didnt want to buy 2 -cots.
for high chair when my daughter staterd weaning I used the bumbo and when she was ready for the high chair my son was in a normal seat so didnt need 2.
we reused alot of things but got a new bouncy seat and carseat.
it might be tricky to begin with but honestly tou will be fine. try to grt out the house often and join a toddler group so they will both nap after
