Headaches?

I've been having terrible headaches this week. Migranes even some days. Anyone else experiencing this? I never had many headaches before being pregnant. I'm 14 weeks.

I occasionally got headaches even before pregnancy and I'm 14 weeks now and started getting headaches. I have noticed when I drink enough water I don't get them as bad. There is also another thread about this not too far back if you search for it and people have lots of good suggestions for remedies.

  • I read headaches are very common in the 2nd trimester. I agree with PP, drink lots of water!
  • That's probably my downfall. I hate water! It literally makes me gag.

What about carbonated or flavored water? Anything is better than nothing! :)

I'm drinking lots of water & I don't know if that helps or not but if I'm any bit tired or stressed they get way worst...
  • I drink water all day long but still have been having the same experience
  • I get them right before bed. No fun at all!
  • My midwife told me to drink some caffeine to help. Some days it does.
It's s nasty second trimester symptom.
  • I'm 14 weeks and suffering from headaches/migraine. Lasted 3 days. Lots of water and sleep helped. Though I had to take the days off work. Also important to check your blood pressure if you're getting headaches.
  • So glad I ran across this post. I've been having ugly headaches for about 3 weeks. My Co-workers, who are also moms, didn't recall having wicked headaches. Thought something might be wrong. I have found that water helps, but, for me, staying calm is the key. I recently suffered a loss and gave been overly emotional. Emotional distress makes it worse. Cliche as it seems, happy thoughts make the headaches subside ... slightly.
  • I've had a few bad headaches recently, which is unusual for me. In each case I attributed it to being dehydrated. Good to know I'm not the only one.
  • Yup :-/ about 2-3 times a week usually starts in the early afternoon and lasts the rest of the day. Ugh. Definitely a second trimester anomaly for me, with my first pregnancy and this one. I don't get headaches any other time except the second trimester of pregnancy.
  • Im in the same boat. I suffer from daily headaches since week 5. Im at 14 wks now. I have gotten 2 migraines during this time, which involved IV fluids to get them to subside. I always drink at least 2 liters per day, which seems to help a little. Tried almost everything... Relaxation, tylenol, accupuncture, sleep, etc....the biggest thing that has helped is daily caffeine in the morning!! A cup a day and my 24-7 headaches have turned into a light headache at night. So much better now, I hope this helps for you!!
  • Lol I just posted the same thing and didn't see yours. Yes I'm having a lot lately too and don't know why
  • It's a pretty common symptom in pregnancy.  If you don't have it, the book What to Expect When You're Expecting is wonderful about answering questions like this and letting you know what symptoms you may experience week to week.  Also, something you'll find out in the coming months Moms forget what pregnancy and labor are like.  Between pregnancy brain and sleep deprivation this time of life becomes a haze and most women don't remember the details.

  • I'm 18 weeks and have had a headaches past two days :-/ heard they come more often further you get. I try to just drink more water bc nothing else seems to help!
  • If you have cut out caffeine, try having a small glass of soda or a small coffee. I went from having pop every day to not having any at all. I let myself have a small glass and it has helped my headaches.
  • Hey all. Well I'm resurrecting this in a hope that someone has some remedies. I've had a headache/migraine for the last three days and finally called off to work today and am waiting for a call back from the doctor. I've tried Tylenol (by the way that stuff is worthless), tons of fluids (water and Gatorade), coffee, sleep (headache is just keeping me up or waking me up), cool compress on my eyes/neck/forehead, dark room and quiet, getting out for fresh air, cool shower.... Pretty much everything I can think of and I'm still not getting any relief. Any advice or remedies you can think of?
  • I was having terrible headaches nearly every day around week 14.   I discovered it was related to my caffeine intake so I gave up my morning coffee and I haven't had a headache since the withdrawal symptoms subsided. :)))

I'm sorry you're dealing with this.  It really sucks when there's nothing that's working.  This will probably get chunked into the pile of things that don't work, but pressing down on the webbed area between your left thumb and forefinger is supposed to help some as does massaging the head and especially the temples.

Could the headache be sinus related?  If so, maybe a hot drink or a warm bath/shower might help?  If it could be sinuses the head massage can be extended into a facial massage focusing on the forehead around the eyebrows, the cheekbones and on/around the nose to help the fluid loosen up and flow.

My bf has chronic migraines due to his sinuses being incredibly screwed up after brain surgery and those tips help him out.  Hopefully they can help you too.

The only thing that seems to help when I get one is caffeine.

Ugh that's the worst! I've been getting migraines this time and luckily I've been able to get them to go away pretty quickly each time.

Try some peppermint oil on your temples and base of your neck. That helps me sometimes.

I would also check your blood pressure to make sure it's not that.
  • I have had headaches everyday for about the past 5 weeks.. I have been so miserable that I feel nothing works, no matter how much water I drink, or massages or anything. I have a chiropractors appointment coming up this week that I am hoping will help me out.. I am just so miserable with this!
  • @ktrimble8807 I was having the same issue and an adjustment really helped! I felt awful and out of if the rest of the day, but my headaches have been less severe and more infrequent since then! Hopefully you get some relief!
  • @landonmodena Thank you! I have my adjustment today. I hope it helps!!
  • I've had horrible migraines in the past and a chiropractor helped me. She also helped me figure out my trigger. For me it was looking down while reading for long periods of time. It was pinching off some of the blood flow.

Other common migraine triggers are stress, red wine and chocolate.
