Cooked Sushi...yes or no?

I miss sushi so much, as along as I go to a reputable place it should be ok to order something like a Mexican roll right? Ill prob ask the sushi chef if he can use a different knife than he uses for raw fish...is that acceptable? Do you think it's safe...7 weeks in!

Re: Cooked Sushi...yes or no?

  • I had some avocado and cooked sushi yesterday, so I hope it is ok!
  • I believe they say no sushi, because it's raw fish.
If you have them cook it. I don't see why it would be a problem?

But they do also say no white fish while pregnant cause of the high mercury in them.

Just be careful. It's your body, you can do and eat what you want. But you'll be gambling with risks if it's not cooked just right.

    From parenting.com

" You can safely consume up to 12 ounces a week of wild salmon (not farm-raised), sea bass, shrimp, sole, snapper, flounder, catfish, cod, haddock, sardines, tilapia, ocean perch, and pollack. Canned or shelf-stable salmon is safe. Avoid swordfish, shark, king mackerel, tilefish, refrigerated smoked seafood such as lox, trout, and whitefish (unless cooked as an ingredient in another dish). Thanks for the feedback, I don't plan on any fish...just tempura/fried shrimp or lobster in the rolls :) I just watched a show and the people were learning how to make and eat sushi and now my cravings have really kicked in, lol!

I see no problem with cooked sushi. I have already had it multiple times from Wegmans. I love it from there because they make it fresh every day in store and each package is clearly marked raw or cooked. I love it, but my wallet does not
  • I always continue to have sushi during pregnancy. I stick to shrimp, eel, crabstick, and vegetable rolls. Couldn't go without for 9 months :-)
  • Most sushi ROLLS do not contain actual raw fish. I say go for it! Ice read a few articles that say fish is ok for 1-2 meals a week as long as it isn't fish high in Mercury such as mackerel and shark.
  • I just had the Mexican Roll and it was delicious. I stuck to shrimp and crab rolls for that trip. With my son, I was bad and ate raw fish a few times. I was craving a spicy tuna handroll with avocado in the worst way... My fav chef makes the best handrolls, don't know if I'll make it this whole pregnancy without one.

My midwife said vegetarian sushi and sushi with cooked meats, like crab, are totally fine. The only concern is the raw fish because of the slight increased risk of bacteria, etc.

Thanks for all the responses! I just came back from dinner and it was delish :) everything was cooked and it was so worth it! FYI, I don't like roe anyway and always ask that it's not on my sushi but our sushi chef said that roe is cooked...never knew that so for those of you that like that stuff just ask and make sure it is and you can have it!
  • I have the exact same craving at 7 weeks and I couldn't resist I got a shrimp tempura roll and it was amazing! Not regretting it at all and feel great afterwards!
  • I've had raw sushi even while pregnant. And I was/am completely fine (this was 3 weeks ago) .
As long as it's cooked they say it's fine also is not a fish with a lot of mercury. So salmon is fine to eat. Etc.

My doctor says that sushi is fine. If I have never gotten sick from my local sushi place it is unlikely to happen now. I think as long as it is reputable/clean you will be fine.
