Talking to boss about going part time when returning

Has anyone had any luck speaking to their employer about working part time or working from home a couple days a week after returning from maternity leave? My boss approached me a few months ago and said we could have the conversation if needed, which leads me to believing he is open to it. Although, I am looking for some advice from anyone who has been through that.

The PT option was there for me, but it would have meant losing my STD benefits during my maternity leave because it isn't offered to PT employees. It can also potentially affect your FMLA status (assuming you have it) if you don't meet the required number of hours during the year. The WAH option is there for me if I need it, as long as I don't use it excessively, only a day here or there if I really need it.
