Can I eat a hot dog or what?

Anyone know the deal? I love boiled hot dogs.

Re: Can I eat a hot dog or what?

  • I've eaten lots of hot dogs (strange craving?), but all on the grill or made in a grill pan. Really I don't think it matters, as long as it is steaming hot. Go for it :)

I've eaten hot dogs during both of my pregnancies. I'm comfortable with it as long as they are completely heated through.

I've had several. I used to eat one or two a year, but for whatever reason, they just taste really good lately.

I have never heard this was a no-no. I say go for it. Who can avoid a hot dog in the summer!?

  • As long as it's fully cooked you can ! However when I was around 10 weeks I didn't even realize and was eating the hotdogs raw ! Oopppsss

Oh goodness. If we aren't supposed to, I'm screwed. I have had hardcore cravings for them the entire time so far!
I usually grill mine up and make sure to cut into it and see if it's steaming inside. Then, I smother it in ketchup and mustard with some relish and shove that sucker in my mouth! Mmmmm. Haha!

Yes, as long as they're cooked hot enough in case they contain listeria. You wouldn't want to eat too many because the nitrates aren't the best for baby, but they're not good for adults either! A couple now and then shouldn't be an issue.

I love Costco hotdogs so my husband asked if they are heated to 160 degrees. That's they're minimum temp, so yep! I eat them.
  • Yes, you can eat them. I usually hate hot dogs, but ever since I got pregnant, I can't have enough of them! They're so good with tons of shredded cheddar cheese on them. Mmmmmm. I get the all-natural kind that do not contain any nitrates.

  • I had one for dinner last night :)
  • Summer=fairs=corndogs. This completes my life. I want to eat all the fair food.
  • I try not to have them too often because of how processed they are but man... a pregnant lady's got to do what a pregnant lady's got to do! I LOOOOOVE mine boiled on a steamed bun with mayonaise, relish, celery salt and onion... YUUUUUUUUUM!
  • If you're really worried, get a nitrate free brand like Applegate Farms, they typically have them at Target. I'm sure you'll be fine though with a regular hot dog. Enjoy!

I love mine with mayo, too! With vidalia onion relish. DH thinks I'm crazy.
  • LOL....all day I've been seeing the title of this thread but reading it aloud in my head as Will Ferrel doing Harry Carey!

My doctor has an 18 month old and she said 28 months ago all she ate was hot dogs and lunch meat. Eat your hot dog :)
  • Mmmmm. Now I want a hot dog..

Ohmigosh. That is the one thing I'm looking forward to! The Minnesota state fair is the best eating ever. I'm going to be all fat and waddle around and stuff my face. Can't wait for the end of August!
  • Not sure if you have a trader joes where you're at but they have nitrate free hot dogs. I just figure it's like any other craving during pregnancy, fine in moderation :)
  • Only a no no if it's a cold hotdog. I had to double check my papers from the doc :)
  • Love apple gate farms! We get the all beef, nitrate free ones, so good & don't feel bad that I'm eating them!
  • I had a hotdog for breakfast at a baseball game this morning...I also frequently eat cold cuts.

  • I eat them if I've cooked them myself and know they're well done.
  • Ive eaten them too!!! My doctor told me the best way to cook them if you have to have them is to boil them...it removes some of the nitrates. But I like them on the grill practically burnt yummmmm. So I boil them first then get them on the grill to burn ;)
  • FWIW there isn't really a nitrate-free hot dog. The celery juice they use to make those has trace amounts of nitrates, but it's negligible. Hot dogs are amazing. Eat all the hot dogs.
  • As long as they are cooked ;)
  • I am confused with hot dogs. I know you have to thoroughly heat them because of listeria but don't they still have sodium nitrite? I've been avoiding them but miss them!!
