Cat owners..

any cat owners out there have tips to minimize litter odor? We just moved in with my parents (temporary) but are now in close living quarters with our cats' litter boxes..other than cleaning them every day (I know I'm not allowed but my husbands gonna have to suck it up) just looking for some tips..

We have the Booda and it works so well!! Our litter is now in the basement since we bought our house but when we lived in an apartment it used to be in the bathroom. The smell is contained very well within the box and it even has a filter you can replace to eliminate the smell even more. It's fabulous! We can go weeks without cleaning it if we need to and it still doesn't smell. I should add that we also use the Tidy Cats Small Spaces liter.

  • What kind of litter do you use? I know the one time we tried switching to a different brand than we usually use the box stank to high heaven. The litter we use now can go several days without smelling up the laundry room (where we keep it). Maybe do some for a different one?

  • We keep ours in the kitchen, and use tidy cats scoop able litter for multiple cats. I can't even notice it's there most of the time.
  • We use the Arm & Hammer cat litter...it is a little more expensive than the Tidy Cats but I think it works SO much better at containing the smell. I also second PP's suggestion of the Booda...we had a Booda Dome when we were in our tiny apartment, and that thing was awesome at containing the smell.

  • I would consider switching litter.
I also keep a car air freshener hanging inside the box and stick a dryer sheet or two in the filter on top.
  • If you have an enclosed box it helps a lot and a litter that isn't scented. I never smell our cats box. But he also has access to our backyard so he goes outside most of the time.
  • If you change your cat's litter, start by mixing it 50/50.  Cats don't like drastic change and I don't want them to poop on your stuff (as mine always seem to find an excuse to :)

We put a bit of Feline Pine in with our litter, which really helps with the smell.  Arm and Hammer litter also works really well… or buy the cheap stuff and sprinkle baking soda in it.
  • Yeah, you can try and sprinkle some arm and hammer baking soda in there too. That will absorb some smell and just scooping it regularly helps a great deal. We use the scoopable kind now that we don't have kittens anymore. Switch the litter gradually though. That is a good recommendation.

Enclosed box. Def pay the extra for the "good" litter. That makes a huge difference. And get the multi cat one. Also, pour baking soda in the bottom of the box before you put the litter in. And scoop it daily. (I had a really stinky poo-er, and was using cheap litter in an open pan box... Box was in my room as I was the only one with a cat in the apartment.. It was horrible!!!!)

I use arm n hammer litter as well and arm and hammer powder to sprinkle in after scooping. I used to be the scooper doing it twice daily. But now my oldest son took over for me for now, but he makes more of mess than the cats do. So now he uses a small shop vac after he scoops. I noticed how he liked the little shop vac better than the broom. He's such a little man!!!!

Yes use better quality if you don't want any smell, people don't even realize we have two cats in the house, because im obsessed with a non cat smell home.
  • Thanks for the recommendations..we currently use arm and hammer double duty but perhaps I will start switching it over to another kind slowly..poor kitties don't know what's going on or why they're in a different house..I'm so afraid they're going to go to the bathroom all over my parents' stuff lol I'm also hoping that if he goes back to scooping it every day like before I was pregnant when I could do it (he has slacked off quite a bit and I can't get mad bc they are my cats) that it won't smell any more
