24 hr. Protein test

anyone else had to do the 24 hr. Protein test? My blood pressures have been good, my swelling is outrageous and I am also having to do 2 non stress tests a week. I did the 24 hr urine protein test last week and I am told 140 is normal and 300 is hospitalization. Mine was 248. Just wondering if anyone had it if there is a way to keep the protein levels from rising?

Re: 24 hr. Protein test

  • I assume your doctor is monitoring you for preeclampsia. This happened to me in the 36th week with DD and they went ahead and induced me right at 37 weeks. My blood pressure was perfect the entire pregnancy and was only slightly elevated when they had me do the urine collection. I didn't notice any swelling. Because my numbers from the collection came back borderline and I was at the "safe" point for delivering my doctor felt the best path was to go ahead and induce. It was explained to me that pre-e can escalate very quickly and can be very risky to your health as well as baby. Which is probably why they want to monitor you in the hospital if your levels go above 300.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to stop it or prevent it and the only cure so to speak is delivering the baby. Your doctors will do all they can to keep you pregnant and baby safe for as long as possible. Try to keep yourself relaxed, lie on your left side as much as possible and follow your doctor's advice.

I'll give my experience but apparently my doctor is not typical.

With my last pregnancy, at my 32-week I had elevated BP (140s/90s+) and +3 protein dip. I did the 24-hour urine test and my protein was 1500 mg. We simply followed up with 24-hour urine tests and bloodwork weekly for the next 8 weeks (protein varied from 1500 mg down to 900 mg and back up to 1500 mg). Right before my 40-week appointment my protein came back at 2600 mg (>1000 mg jump from the previous week) so we decided to induce. With this pregnancy I started having BP and protein issues at 24.5 weeks (BP 140s/90s+ and protein dips of +2). At 25 weeks my 24-hour protein count was 1300 mg. I did some research and decided to follow the renal diet and with my follow-up 24-hour test (done exactly 1 week later) my protein was down to 400 mg. I would recommend researching the renal diet and see if it is something that might help you. As for my protein levels, my doctor has never mentioned hospitalization since my blood work (liver/kidney enzymes, platelet count, etc.) were perfect and I had no other signs of pre-e (headaches, swelling, blurred vision).

  • I'm being monitored for preeclampsia (no fun) but my pressure have been through the roof, then they will fool me and be fine for about 2 weeks ( I'm on biweekly appts for the past month) then At my appt, it rises. I have to turn in my sample thursday! He tried to deliver me , but I was not having it! Not far enough along.
  • I'm actually turning in my jug today. My BP has been slightly elevated all pregnancy 125/ 85 to 130/90. Never had any protein concerns. No other symptoms. Hopefully this is a precaution and no real issues. I'll follow up
  • @PixelPosy I had preeclampsia with my first baby 15 years ago. I am being monitored very closely this time and I am 30 weeks today. I didn't have the preeclampsia with my second but did have kidney problems with her.

I had serious pressures with my first and stayed in under monitoring and meds. I delivered at 39 weeks with him and my preeclampsia roared its ugly head at 22 weeks with him.

  • My doctor uses an online appt/ test result/ questions app. One result said normal range was up to 150. My value was 156. Before I flip out, I left my doc a message. Sigh.... The unk sucks
  • I had to do the 24hour jug a couple times with my son. They monitored me closely for pre-e from 22 weeks till delivery due to elevated bp starting at 22 weeks, increased protein in the pee tests and ankle swelling. I made it to 38 weeks when they finally induced me for pre-e when I started having vision blurs and felt like crap, etc and had to go to l&d. This time my bp has only been elevated at the dr office, she said it is white coat hypertension due to my last pregnancy. :/ so she has me taking my bp at home which has been fine. All blood and urine tests have come back fine too. Try not to let them scare you into an early delivery/induction if you don't feel it's right. I had one dr trying to induce me at 26 weeks last time because of my bp and urine tests and I refused, and would not go to that dr again. Of coarse true pre-e can only be resolved with delivery of baby.
