Spider bites? What do you think?

We're in the ER right now because my DS has some pretty serious looking bite all over his legs. Yesterday they were small bumps, today they're quadrupled in size and are blistering and oozing. Anyone have any idea what could cause this?. The doctors here say it looks like poison Ivy but we haven't left the house. What are your thoughts on this? There are 8 of them. image

Re: Spider bites? What do you think?

  • Did they have white heads and did they consider mrsa or other skin infections?
I got mrsa and it started out as tiny zits that would become big boil-like things. It took forever for them to figure it out. :(
Hope he's better soon. A quick culture of the sites can't hurt.

Yea they aren't wanting to cultures. But I'll ask again. No they looked like regular little bites. The turned huge over a day now they're starting to form multiple blisters.

    No whiteheads

    Thanks you!!

  • My daughter got some bumps that were pretty similar to those last summer... We took her to the doctor and they never figured out what it was. We live in Texas and the doctor said that she has seen some crazy chigger bites here. I don't know though. Hers started out small too and she stopped getting them in the fall so was probably something in the yard. I hope you can get it figured out! Let us know!

Do you have a cat or dog that goes outside? Animals that walk through poison ivy can retain the oil in their fur. People who are sensitive to poison ivy can then get it from touching their fur.

We're in Texas too! I've had pest control out 2 times in the past month so this pisses me off! I bet he has what your daughter had.

Yes I have 2 cats that go outside for maybe an hour a day but they stay in my backyard. I don't have any poison ivy in my backyard but maybe the neighbors do! I don't know I doubt it though! Hmmmm

What did they do to treat your DD?

  • Yeah it's probably the same thing. They just gave her some steroid cream to put on them and that helped. She kept getting them here and there throughout the summer and then it stopped in the fall. We have had pest control out too so I have no idea what it is. Some little critter.

His spots look really similar to what my sister and my dad get with even the slightest contact with poison ivy. The spots quickly become oozing boils and they typically get a shot of Benadryl and a round of steroids to control the reaction. They are super careful about staying away from the plants, but their cat wanders outside and sometimes comes back with it on his fur. Since house cats roam over a surprisingly large territory, even if your neighbors don't have any, someone a few blocks away might.

That's really just food for thought though. I really hope that the doctors find a way to help him quickly, whatever it turns out to be, that's got to be pretty miserable for the little guy.

Oops, missed the part about them staying in the yard while they are out. I still think it looks just like poison ivy, but I just hope the doctors work with you to find an answer and a treatment quickly, regardless of the cause.

  • Thanks for the responses ladies! They gave him steroid liquid medicine and Benadryl just now and are prescribing antibiotic, Benadryl and some antibiotic ointment. I hope he doesn't get these again!!

  • I third poison ivy. The oils from the ivy are sooooo easily transmitted. Hope he's feeling better soon.

  • Oh March... I'm just seeing this now :-( i'm so sorry that your DS is going through this! Poor baby! And so much stress for mama… hopefully The little man feels better soon.

Poor guy! They look painful!! I hope the meds help!
  • This may sound crazy but I think mosquito bites? Has he been outside lately? My daughter is allergic to Mosquitos so when she gets bit they look very familiar to your pics. They are way more larger than the normal mosquito bite.
  • My first thought was mosquito bites as well. I got 27 last summer and they all looked like that. Every. Single. One.
  • How is he doing did they ever figure out what caused it? As the pp said I got bit a bunch of times by a mosquito all at once and they were very abnormally large went to dr and they said it was probably a reaction due to the amount of bites.

He's doing great! The steroid really helped! No more swelling and redness. The blisters have already dried up and are scabbing. It could be mosquito bites.... Did yours blister and ooze like that?

I don't remember them oozing just getting extremely large.  im glad he his feeling better! he is too cute!!

  • My kids also have reactions like that to mosquito bites! The first time it happened to my daughter, I thought it was a bunch of spider bites, but it was just mosquitoes. Yes they blister and ooze, especially when the kids scratch or rub them. Whatever it is, I'm glad it's getting better for your little guy!

These could very well be mosquito bites or even flea bites, you mentioned your cats go outside. Flea bites tend to ooze and swell up a day or two after the bite and itch and hurt like a bitch. Glad to read your little one is better!

  • I remember a couple of them getting oozy because I was scratching at them so much. It was just pus and crud. I had one on my thigh swell up to the size of a tennis ball. They can get pretty gnarly. The more you scratch at it the more swollen and oozy it'll get.

The thing is He didn't Scratch them at all! He just cried from the pain and we got him some itch cream, which didn't help. The swelling of his whole ankles and legs was crazy! Anyway, I don't think he knows yet that he can scratch for relief... Thank God! It was like multiple tiny blisters per location. It just didn't look right! I'm so very glad he's better! Thanks for the responses ladies!! ❤️❤️❤️

ETA: tried to edit some of it for typing errors... I'm too tired to fix the other errors lol

  • It's happening again! Ugh there's got to be a way to avoid this. I've got bug spray but it's the deet free kind that isn't too strong smelling. It's obv not working too well. Or I must have to reapply it every hour.

Anyone have suggestions on a good deet free bug spray for kids?

  • Sorry you're dealing with this @Marchmellow2. :( Your poor son!!

My favorite bug spray is California Baby Natural Bug Blend Bug Repellent. It's expensive but it's the only one I use because it's the only one I've ever found that actually works and isn't loaded with nasty chemicals (even those don't work half of the time!)

California Baby is made from essential oils and I have nanny friends who actually make their own but I just buy mine it's easier.

It even repels Scorpions, which depending on where you live can be a huge bonus!!
  • @mamamagagail . Thank you so much!!! I will be buying that tomorrow! Thanks again!

Aww poor little guy :(  These new pics def look more like a rash/immune response from a insect bite compared to the earlier pics (which look a lot like poison ivy)  I wish I had a better suggestion for you.

@BostonBaby1 Aw thanks mama!!. It happens in the house too! We haven't even been outside since yesterday morning.. So weird. I'm just feeling a little helpless at this point. I wish there were a like a miracle medicine they could give him that would keep the bugs away for a couple months!! They need to create it lol.

    YGPM btw :)

  • @sailingupmnts . Yes you're right. My doctor confirmed that he is highly allergic to whatever Is biting him. And that if I don't put steroid ointment on the bites right away, they will grow in size and start to blister. Causing permanent scars. :(. He said when they blister I need an oral steroid so I'll need to take him the ER again. :(

I just feel helpless!! I wish there was a way to stop them from biting him.

  • It's so strange that his body is reacting like this, I'm sorry! I wonder if you or SO are getting bites too? Maybe not reacting like him but noticing small bites on you as well. I wonder what is chewing on your DS

Yes I got bites too. It was Mosquitos that bit both of us. So I think he's having a bad reaction to these nasty Texas Mosquitos. I just found out there's a new virus they're carrying around now too. ugh!

Good news is the bug spray seems to be working. I spray his entire body every night after his bath. That seems to be keeping them away this week.

@sailingupmnts thanks for asking!! He's doing fine now. Just scars and marks everywhere :(

He just got his MMR and chicken pox shots about 10 days ago so we've been trying to recover from that this week too! Pour guy... Fevers, diarrhea, bites all that. No fun!
