Newborn Spit Up and Projectile Vomit

One of my 5 week old twins started vomiting and/or spitting up large amounts after every feeding. It is a chalky, thick white/yellow color. His temp is fine, he is wetting every diaper we change, and he acts normal other than arching his back trying to make his belly feel better. Any experience or words of advice? My Dr said not to worry unless projectile vomiting after every feeding or we notice dehydration (lack of wet diapers). But I am worried he is not getting enough milk in his system and just generally want to know how to make him more comfortable.

Are you feeding from a bottle? If so, you're likely over feeding. Try stopping the feeding towards the end to see if he's still hungry or not. If you're breastfeeding, I'm not sure.

  • Reflux maybe? Can you hear gurgling befor he throws up?

  • Reflux is really common in babies. It gets better- but not for awhile-6 months or so. But there are things you can do. How much are you feeding? If you are bottle feeding I would limit to 2 oz. & then make sure you get some really good burps out of him. Also don't lay him flat for an hour after the feeding. Hope that helps!

Just stated happening to my 4wk old- and also happened to DD1 when she was a baby. It's reflux.

We stop after every oz to get a good burp (or after 5 min breastfeeding). We keep her upright for 30 Minutes after every feeding.

I may switch to a preemie slow/flow nipple on the bottle, I feel like she's sprinting through bottles and that can't be helping.

If it gets any worse, I'm going to ask my doc for some Zantac. She's pretty miserable sometimes, poor thing.

  • We have been dealing with this on and off with one of our twins too. I had her checked and all is well. It seems to be over-feeding. Burping is so important for her and makes a huge difference even if it takes forever but sometimes she still vomits. It had become less often but she did it tonight again. It's so stressful. Seems like so much milk coming up. I offer the breast again after and sometimes she wants more and sometimes she doesn't.
  • I just re-read your post and wanted to add that our babe wasn't doing it after every feed but that was one of the things our midwife asked about. If it's every feed I would get it checked out.
  • So we ended up going to the ER today because the vomiting was after every single feeding. Turns out he has pyloric stenosis, a condition where a portion of his stomach enlarges and doesn't let food pass to his small intestines. It presents itself most commonly at 4-6 weeks and is more common in males. He has to have surgery tomorrow to fix the condition. It can be really dangerous if left untreated as it leads to really bad dehydration. So sad for my little man but so happy we caught it

  • Oh @blairdavis99 I'm so sorry to hear it's that. I read about that and was worried when we had projectile vomiting. My DH thought I was crazy for thinking that. I'm so glad you got it checked. Thinking of your little one. Keep us posted.
