Toddlers: 24 Months+

Waking super early!!

i need your help mummas!! My son has recently turned two and he is now waking at 5am and will not go back to sleep! We've tried cutting his sleep down, which results in a very cranky toddler at the end of the day, later bed time, earlier bed time, another blanket etc but nothing is working, any suggestions?! I'm at my wits end and super tired,

Re: Waking super early!!

  • Kids just go through phases like that. Yes it sucks, but it sounds like you've tried all that you can.

My son is 3 but when he gets up super early and if the baby isn't up yet I give him a kindle and let him play games while we lay in bed.

    Just stick it out.

  • We use the ok to wake clock! It turns green when it's ok for DS to come out of his room. He will sometimes wake up early but stays in his room till it turns green. By staying there he will sometimes fall back asleep. It has been amazing for us. (Target and Amazon both have them)
  • My son is also 2 and wakes up at 5, like clockwork. Like you, we've tried everything. The only thing that works for us is if I bring him in bed with me. However, that's not a habit I want to start. I already had to break that habit when he was younger. My son won't get out of bed until I go get him, so I leave him until 5:45 or 6 as long as he is happy talking to himself and playing with his stuffed animals.
  • Both of my toddlers do this. They go to bed at 7:30am and wake up between 5-6 and seven if I am lucky. My daughter has learned she not allowed to leave her room till the sun is up. My son hasn't learned yet...but we are working on it. I am looking into those clocks for the kids that let them know when it's okay. Both kids though have quiet toys in their beds to play with until it's time to get up.

  • My daughter wakes early as well. I just have her lay next to me and she either plays while mommy rests or she eventually falls back asleep.
  • I was just about to write in my own complaint about early waking when I saw this thread!

My otherwise lovely 2 yr old insists on waking up at 5:30 every morning. We've tried moving her bedtime up and down, darkening her room, rocking her back to sleep (ha!), putting her in bed with us, etc... Nothing works.

I think I'll order the Ok to Wake Clock suggested and give that a go next...

  • We have the ok to wake alarm clock too. We've used it for about a year now. He knows to stay in his ruin until the light turns green.

  • Definitely try a sleep clock. I would phase up the time it goes off, though, to build trust in the clock. First set it for before he normally wakes, so that when he wakes, he will see that it's on and knows that it WILL light up. Gradually set it for later and later. 10 minute increments might work. My son also gets up way too early sometimes. The sleep clock has helped keep him in his room, though it doesn't necessarily get us all more sleep. Sometimes we just hear him (bathroom mostly) and can't fall back asleep. It still sucks but it helps. We have the Kid'Sleep Classic bunny clock.
