2nd Trimester

Baby too small

Hi
I had my anatomy scan yesterday and the sonographer said my baby is measuring 12 days less than my due date. I'm technically 21w today and she said she sees it at a little over 19w. I know my cycle is longer by a week so some of the gap may be explained but on the other hand I never had a scan that showed a discrepancy during this pregnancy.
I'm a little nervous. Does anyone have knowledge or experience with a similar situation?
Thanks!

  • If they are using your LMP as the estimate for your due date and you typically have a longer cycle, your EDD is probably off. I was tracking ovulation so I got a better EDD from my OB, and it's about a week behind what it would have been if I had used my LMP. It's entirely possible that you ovulated later than you thought, especially if everything with baby measured normal.

I assume I did in fact ovulate later, however, baby measured correctly in all previous sonos.

  • I believe I remember hearing that earlier scans are more accurate in dating so I would continue to go with your EDD and not worry too much.  You might just be having a smaller baby.  It is something to remember for when your due date rolls around and you don't go into labor you may want to remind your doctor if they are talking about induction.

  • Early estimated DD/calculated by US is by far the most accurate.. My little guy is measuring ahead by 1 week, they did change my DD (at 13 weeks) but I am still assuming the original just because then I will avoid the possibly unnecessary induction as well.

Im sure things are just fine. Mine is bigger than avg, yours is likely just measuring smaller than avg. No 2 are alike. :) Does not mean something is wrong! Especially if the heartbeat is present.

My LMP and EDD were two weeks off because I ovulated two weeks later than my normal cycle. I'd been on birth control for years and my body hadn't fully regulated yet after going off of it. I would go by the EDD your doctor gave you, until they state otherwise. Although I trust the techs who do my sonograms, I trust what my doctor says when it comes to things like that.

They just told me today my little girl was measuring a little smaller. I'm 24 weeks and said she's measuring a little over 22 weeks. Said all organs look great just may be a smaller baby. They plan on checking again. Say the size can fluctuate so much with each scan because babies grow so differently and at different rates.
Was advised to increase protein in my diet and avoid caffeine.

If your doctor did a dating scan around 8 weeks, then that's the due date you go off of.  That's because during the first trimester all babies grow at roughly the same pace.  There are a lot of reasons your baby could be small now, including genetics, but there are also health factors that could cause it.  If your doctor isn't worried then you shouldn't worry about it.
