3rd Trimester

Kicking counts

am I really meant to count how many times my baby kicks? I feel like sometimes it's super active and sometimes it's quiet. Half the time I don't realize if it is kicking or not from just being used to it.

I feel like recently it's been kicking but just more gently than before, it's not as active. But could it be because I lowered my sugar intake. Does that make sense?

Re: Kicking counts

  • My OB recommends doing kick counts after eating. Lay down, stay calm and quiet, and count the kicks. If you get to 10 within an hour, you're good to go. You only need to count until you get to 10 kicks.

Baby is getting bigger and running out of room, so you may not feel the big kicks very often anymore. I am 31 weeks and the majority of the movement I feel now is much smoother, with the occasional big jab, but the movement is still there.

  • My doctor told me to pick the time when baby is usually the most active (for my LO, that's at night) and the goal is to get ten movements in two hours.

  • So many articles said to do daily kick-count, but as my midwife says...you know your baby and his habits. I only do a kick-count on slow days. I drink a large glass of cold juice (sugar and temperature "kicks" them into gear!), and you want those 10 kicks in 2 hours (waiting 1/2 hr after drinking juice but it's usually before). Lying on your side is best.
That said, you want at least 6 series of movements/day.

I've been obsessed so this was what I was told (several times, heehee).
