Antibiotics in third trimester

I have been having a terrible sinus infection for the past week or so and a pounding headache and have been treating with tylenol only. That ofcourse did not help much so I went to see my internal medicine doctor and she gave me a prescription for augmentin antibiotics, its a category B on the safe list of meds while pregnant. My doctor said sudafed is not safe so this is really my only option. Has anyone taken this antibiotic in pregnancy? I'm just a little bit hesitant on taking them but I'm not getting better so I think I will have to. Thanks Ladies :)

  • I am on amoxicillin for a sinus infection, which is also a category B. I was struggling for a week or so before I finally went it, and after 5 days of the antibiotic I'm finally turning the corner. Your doctor will weigh the risks and benefits of letting you stay sick or giving you the antibiotic, so I would trust them. Did you double check with you OB? That was what really set my mind at ease, because she was 100% comfortable with me taking the antibiotic that my general practitioner prescribed.

  • Yes, I'm on augmentin right now for an ear infection that got so bad my ear drum perforated. Doc said it's safe and the truth is an untreated infection is more dangerous for a baby than the antibiotics your doctor prescribes. If you let bacterial infections go untreated you can end up with sepsis amongst a other things.
  • I took Z-pac during the second tri with my second when I had an ear infection.  I was nervous about taking it, but my mom who is a pediatric nurse and tends to lean toward the conservative side of things said to take it and not to worry.  Everything was fine and DS turned out perfect...not that I'm bias or anything ;)  Feel better!
  • I took augmentin for a UTI in the second tri. It's one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics during pregnancy. Definitely better to get rid of the sinus infection with antibiotics than to wait for it to get worse.
  • Im on Keflex for a UTI. It's also a cat. B
The benefits outweigh the risks on this one... UTI's can cause preterm labor so I have no reservations about taking it.
  • I have been on ammoxacilin and penicillin one for bladder infection the other for strep throat

I an one of those people who doesn't even want to take paracetamol while pregnant! When I had a bad kidney infection a few weeks ago I was given antibiotics for a week and was told off by the midwife for not regularly taking paracetamol and codeine!
  • I'm taking antibiotics also for my UTI and I'm in my 3rd trimester. I was diagnosed also for severe kidney infection.

I'm taking antibiotics for a bladder infection. That I didn't know I had because I didn't feel any symptoms. My Dr said it's safe and it doesn't harm the baby. She gave it to me now before It gets closer to my due date.

Thank you ladies! I am taking the antibiotics now and hopefully they will start to help the sinus infection, I still feel the same and this is the third day :( I also take Tylenol to help with the headaches.
