Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

recovery time after d&c

This is our 7th loss, but it seems as though my uterus is holding on for dear life to this one. We found out monday that our pumpkin seed passed away nearly a month ago, I was so upset at the dr office i couldnt think of questions to ask, but my husband and I are ready to move on so we can heal mentaly. If we go through with it this will be our first d&c. I was wondering what kind of physical recovery time yall have experienced afterwards. I know of course i wont want to go back to work the next day or anything crazy like that, but did your dr write you out of work for a long time or just a few days?

Re: recovery time after d&c

  • Sorry for your losses. I had a d&c for a mmc on Friday may 8. That day I lounged around with period like cramps. The next day I was up cleaning with no problems. However, the morning after that, I woke up with intense pain and when I told the nurse who called to check up on me, she said I had probably overdone it with cleaning. Monday, 3 days post d&c, I went for a walk and that night had contractions (I have one child and know what I was feeling) for about 2 hours and passed some tissue then they went away. Again, I think that would have happened eventually to pass the tissue, but my walking brought it on quicker. Since then, no pain, just on and off spotting. My doctor said he suggested I take a week off for physical healing but was willing to sign off for as long as I need for emotional healing. I work in healthcare and work 12 hour shifts on my feet, so that may have been why he suggested I take a week off, because I have seen others post that they went back the next day. Obviously, everyone is different and may take more or less time to heal. The procedure was the easiest part of our mc, just make sure they put you under for it. I was in and out of the hospital in 1.5 hours not including pre-procedure prep and don't remember a thing about it.

  • My D&C was easy I went in at 6:30AM and was home by 11 and slept the majority of the day away. The next day I went up to my parents and had to lay down with a heat pad due to some mild cramping, but I took it easy. By the third day I was back to normal. I stopped bleeding after a week, but everyone has a different experience. I also choose to do my D&C on a Friday so I wouldn't miss work and did go in on Monday.

I am now 6wks post D&C and got my first AF on Friday. It is just like a normal period now, but it started off super light and weird.

I am so sorry for your loss. Good luck with your procedure.

  • Thanks. I work on healthcare also. 7 12 hr shifts at night, then off for 7 im hoping i can schedual it for my first off day so i dont have to miss any work
  • Yikes! Idk if I could keep my sanity working 7 12s in a row! I hope your procedure goes well.
  • I've had 2 D&Cs and my recovery time was actually different for both.  My first one, I was 9.5 weeks along, and the recovery was not bad at all.  I took 2 days off work -- 1 for the actual procedure, and one more day to heal. Physically, I was fine going back to work the 3rd day. My second one, I was only 6 weeks along but the recover was horrible, and I missed 3 full days of work.  But I had a lot of bleeding beforehand, so I think I was weaker going into it.  Drink gatorade after the D&C and try to make yourself eat something even if you don't feel like it, and that will hopefully help you get your strength back sooner rather than later.  Sorry you are going through this :(

I will have to remember this im terrible about not eating if i feel puny. Thanks.
  • My OB said 2 days to 2 weeks depending on emotionally how I felt about going back. I just had mine on Thursday and have not gone back to work due to a post-op infection. I only wish my recovery was as easy as some others have said. So sorry for your loss. It's truly the hardest thing I've ever been through
  • I had a d&c on May 7. It has been tough on me physically. I had an extreme amount of pain (like labor contractions) so I went to my doc and was told I was overdoing it and to stop it. I am 13 days out and cramping has improved, still spotting and still getting + preg tests. I had a d&c for testing purposes. I actually started bleeding the day before my d&c and that pain was unbearable so as much as it hurt after d&c I think it was easier than natural would have been. I can't say for sure though since my losses have always been ended via intervention. Sorry for your loss :(
