3rd Trimester

Post-Date with no dilation/sign of labor — experiences?

My due date has come and gone without a single contraction, no dilation, no effacement. Clearly, this baby and my body aren't ready yet! And that's fine, but the waiting is hard with no indication labor is anywhere near...
Has anyone else had this experience of going from 0 straight into labor? I know everyone is different, but I keep wondering if it's just going to "strike" one day and begin, or be a slow build. I know there's no way to know — just curious about how others' labor started...

Re: Post-Date with no dilation/sign of labor — experiences?

  • Yep! With my daughter, I had no signs of labor, was 0cm dilated, etc. at my 40w appointment. She was born at 40w3d, although labor started at 40w2d. I remember crying a lot when my due date came and went because I was soooo done.

At 40w2d I had tons of pain and could barely walk. Went to the hospital and they said it was early labor and sent me home. 24 hours after that my water broke and DD was born 12 hours after that.

  • If it is helpful to think about, you aren't overdue, you are just "due". If you lived in Europe, your EDD likely would've been at 41 weeks rather than 40.  Current status is no indication of future progress which is why some women decline internals to avoid the false hope that delivery is near or be worrisome that nothing has happened yet. Hang in there! The end is near!
  • Last pregnancy I was 5 days past my due date with no signs of labor... then BAM my water broke and contractions started.

My sister was the same with all hers, she always went close to 2 weeks over.
