Help!! Extremely fussy baby

My DD is not sleeping tonight at all so far. The last week she's slept 5-6 hrs at a time at night with no problems. She's fussing when swaddled and only seems happy when I make her sit or stand up. Also is it normal for her to poop several times a day? Today and tonight alone I've changed probably 7 poopie diapers. This mommy is super tired and pulling her hair out..Please..help.

Oh! She's 8weeks old today and I'm only breastfeeding if that helps.

  • It could be gas, based on her liking certain positions. But it is hard to say. Has she been pooping at this rate prior to this night? Or has she been constipated? That could be another reason that she's uncomfortable. But if that's it, then it's resolving on its own! I hope you find out what is bugging her. It is times like this that it would be nice if our LO's could tell us what's wrong!

It could be a change in development/growth spurt ... Or gas. Or tummy issues. I'm currently hunting down what's making my baby irritable and gassy. Just went 100% diary and gluten free. But it can take awhile to have a full affect.

You could try some gripe water and see if that helps. A nice warm bath might help her relax too.

    Good luck!

Oh, snd you could try rubbing her down with lavender essential oil (always break with a carrier oil such as almond oil or coconut oil) to help her relax. You can also diffuse lavender oil in the air to help in outage sleep
  • My baby is 7 weeks today and I've been experiencing something similar with her. She's sleeping, but it seems as though she's fighting me as I try to put her down when she's obviously tired and been up too long. Like your baby, she fusses unless I sit or hold her standing up facing me. She'll be fine when she first wakes up, but then she gets so upset - even screams sometimes!

I agree with @adelems . I think it's a developmental leap and/or growth spurt. Our babies are noticing new things about the world and this may cause some over stimulation. What's worked for me to get LO to sleep when she's upset is to not talk to her and make limited eye contact :( I take her in the bathroom with the lights off and run the fan. Then I just quietly sway and bounce until she's asleep.

I've also read that what worked to soothe your baby yesterday might not work today. You have to just keep trying different things. I think this is true because I used to just be able to rock her to sleep while holding her to my chest. Now, it's like she knows I'm trying to put her to sleep so she fusses even more when I sit in the rocking chair!

As for the dirty diapers, is she eating more? My LO is eating more and making more dirty diapers these days...

Mine went through that on Monday night. Be was up literally all night until 6am! The past few nights I've been really strict with a 8pm bedtime and doing the 5 S technique from happiest baby on the block and it's worked like a charm. Last night he slept from 9 until 1230 and then from 1 to 530 and again until 9 am. I think it was partially my technique and partially just him getting over a leap. Just trust that your baby won't keep doing this forever. As far as the pooping goes, just make sure it's not too watery. Otherwise don't worry. Mine poos 4 times a day minimum

I also agree with PP on the methods from Happiest Baby. A must read for anyone dealing with fussy babies. This is my third and never had issues with first two, so I'm still learning new things!
