Ergo infant insert

Is it completely necessary? I've read you can use a rolled up receiving blanket instead. I didn't use my ergo with my DS until he was older because he really liked the moby better. I would like to have both options for this one because I'm sure I will need to be hands free more often with a toddler running around.

    You can totally get away with a towel. I will vouch that the inserts are really hot during summer months (I'm in TX.) I didn't use mine with my last baby and she was born last May.

    I didn't use the insert, I had one but it caused him to get too hot.
