Recommended Probiotics Before Group B Strep Test

edited May 2015 in July 2015 Moms
Has any one else looked into or started taking probiotics during their pregnancy? I was talking with a Naturopath and she asked if I take probitoics or had started taking them in preparation for the Group B Strep Test at 34-38 weeks. I mentioned this to my midwife and she was like "that is a great idea". It kind of took me aback because I would have thought if it could help ppl that they would have been recommending it for a while now. Has anyone else been suggested this or is anyone else taking them?

  • lol I'm not sure, but I'm guessing based upon the Naturpaths comment about using one in a higher concentration that doesn't contain sugar that she would lean towards probably not enough. Just a guess though :)

I take a probiotic pill every morning and I have for a few years now.  When I found out I was pregnant, my doctor assured me that it was safe to continue taking them.  Apparently there are benefits to taking them for both mother and baby as they support the immune systems of both baby and mother.

I've also been taking probiotics for years, ever since my gall bladder was removed & Dr. said no problems
  • The midwives I work with highly suggest probiotics throughout pregnancy, but especially during the last trimester.  They recommended Floragen 3 to me, but said any would really be fine.  As previously mentioned - they are great for immune development and have also shown to have some promise in preventing childhood obesity.  From what they've told me - probiotics are used regularly in Europe, but US physicians are just starting to catch on.  The women I work with are currently doing a study specifically on Probioitics and Group B Strep and while still unpublished, have had amazing results.  Yogurt, while also good, doesn't have the impact an actual probioitic does.  My doctor also recommended them for my daughter right after she was born as it promotes a healthy gut.  I would put a little on my finger and have her suck it off or if she was having a bottle, mix a little into the bottle.
  • @emfolstad Thank you very much for the info! I have come across a few things like this during pregnancy and it always seems so odd how certain things are barely known about or practiced here but are widely done or required in other places around the world.
I've since started on a daily probiotic designed for pregnancy.
