GBS positive

First of all, I'm sorry if there are other posts about this BUT I'm a FTM and I'm freaking out so I just need to type this....

I am GBS positive, I know it's a super common bacteria but as my due date approaches I am starting to freak out, I know I need 2 rounds of antibiotics which takes 8 hours.. What if my labor is super short and I don't get the full 2 doses? How will I know I'm really in labor and to rush to the hospital? If my water breaks before I'm on antibiotics can the bacteria spread to my baby?

Also, can you still have sex? I know it's a silly question and from my research you can but just thought I'd ask! Some were saying you could push the bacteria closer to the baby and all this stuff so that freaked me out!

I do plan to talk with my Doctor at my next appointment but was hoping to get a sense of relief from anyone else who has experienced this!!

Thanks y'all!

Don't stress. I was positive with my first baby and as luck would have it labor went so fast I never even received the anabiotics. He was absolutely fine. It's just a precaution and as long as they know when you arrive they will take good care of you.we did have to stay at the hospital an extra few hours I think so they could monitor my son but again, everything was fine.

  • I have all the same questions! I'm taking penicillin 3 times a day, I got a shot in the butt and I'm using intravaginal cream all prescribed by my doctor. Yet I'm still nervous of the complications. My bf also just contracted UTI from me since I havent been able to get rid of it this whole pregnancy. I'm so freaked about everything I sleep in w sweater and sweats lol.
  • I've read some horror stories while researching strep B and I wanna know that women and they're babies have walked away from it unharmed.

Also it doesn't hurt your partner. My doctor instructed us to have sex, but with both if us having UTI and me being the cause and having strep B I super stressed and haven't been feeling sexy AT ALL!!!

I had the same experience as Nhbaby. I was GBS positive but labor was too fast for antibiotics. DS was totally fine, absolutely no complications. I have another friend that was the same with her DD. In fact, I know several moms who were positive with no complications and not a single person who had GBS problems.

Step away from the Google! Your doc knows, you will get the treatment you need, and you and LO will be fine. :)
  • I had it my first pregnancy and the baby and are totally fine. Just had to have an antibiotic during labor. I have my test next week for this pregnancy. And yeah, as long as your doctor doesn't have you on pelvic rest you can have sex, it has nothing to do with your partner.
  • I was GBS positive with my first. Received full dose of antibiotics and everything was fine. I have yet to receive the test results on this GBS test. I have been doing some reading and have decided to do some things from here until delivery that are natural ways to help keep GBS colonization down. Remember, even if you test negative now you can become GBS positive by delivery and vice versa. I'm already on daily probiotics that are in my prenatal vitamin but I'm adding a glass of Kefir everyday and Kombucha. Taking a clove or 2of garlic daily. And twice a week I'm adding 2 cups of Apple cider vinegar to my bath. These are all midwife suggested ways of helping a GBS positive woman become negative. I'm also having my son and husband do the same regimen seeing as late onset of GBS infections in newborns seems to come from sources other than the mother.
  • Thanks so much y'all!! I know Google is the enemy when pregnant. LOL!
  • Even without any antibiotics they say only 1 in 200 babies will get the bacteria and of those 5% may have fatal consequences. Keep that in mind, worst case scenarios are pretty rare typically. I second probiotics!!
