Appointment today--is this what your docs said?

I had my 28 week appt today (no u/s-just doppler)--gained 2 pounds since last time and everything is good.  I asked my doc about when she thinks twins should be optimally delivered.  She said that it's usually not scheduled until 37 weeks for the 38-39 week timeframe.  Is this normal?  It sounded to me like how you would answer someone pregnant with a singleton...

She did say that she would be monitoring the babies via u/s and NST's so if things didn't look good, something would be done earlier.  But she said if everything is OK, she'll keep them in as long as possible assuming the placentas are still in good shape and conditions are good.  Is this what your doc says?

  • Sounds like exactly what my docs do. Twins may arrive early on their own, but if they don't start things themselves it is healthier to let them stay in there.
  • Sounds very normal.  My peri wouldn't do a scheduled c-section until 39w without an amnio to check for lung development.  I think most twin moms I know have c-sections/inductions scheduled for the 37-38 week mark.  Occassionally, you'll hear of one earlier, but there are generally special circumstances.

  • That sounds pretty normal to me-I am still waiting to hear on confirmation of my c-section date-it will be either next wekk or the week after, when I am 38 or 39 weeks, depending on what my peri says.
  • My doc won't schedule anything before 7-10 days before due date.
  • I was told I would be monitored weekly and my dr. will not let me go past 38 wks.
  • Sounds about right.  My triplets were originally scheduled to be born on a Monday at 36 weeks and 3 days.  Due to scheduling with the doctors and the hospital, it was moved up to 35 weeks and 6 days.

They didn't even try to schedule it until I passed 34 weeks.

  • Sounds pretty accurate from what I've heard from my doctor so far. There has been a fair amount of backlash recently against OBs who are scheduling inductions and c-sections 'early' (before the due date) for singleton pregnancies. While the babies may be 'big' on u/s they may have benefited from the extra days in utero and I think it's leading to a shift in thought or at least more discussion in the medicaly community. My guess is things will go the same way with twins as long as you're closely monitored to ensure the placenta is functioning well and they are still better in than out.
  • Very normal, as long as there are no other health issues involved, you want to carry as close to 40 weeks as possible.  Anything before 37 is still premature and just because you hit 37 (yes, some docs consider 36 term, mine didn't)  that is no guarantee that the lungs are fully developed.  I was induced almost 39 due to my blood pressure starting to increase, other than that, we would probably have waited another week.
