3rd Trimester

Three Hour Glucose Test and Fasting???

Okay, so I was like five off on my levels after my one-hour and they are making me take the three-hour test tomorrow. They told me to fast 12 hours prior. But I am STARVING. Is there anything I can eat that has no sugar? I don't want to screw up the test, but I am so hungry.

And what do I have to look forward to tomorrow during this test? I am aware that it is a pain, but what exactly do they do..?

Re: Three Hour Glucose Test and Fasting???

  • The lab instructed me not to eat anything (I could drink water if I was thirsty) for 10-12 hours prior to my 3-hour test. There will be a total of 4 blood draws. The fasting one right at the beginning. Then they will immediately make you drink the sugary drink and draw blood each hour for the next 3 hours. The first hour was the toughest for me - I literally wanted to just lie down in the waiting room floor and take a nap. Ask them if they have a place for you to lie down if you aren't feeling well. Good luck tomorrow!

Do not eat. They need you to follow instructions for an accurate test. I don't mean to be harsh, but if you disregard the instructions your numbers could be skewed.

Ask you lab, but I was told specifically NOT to sleep during my 3 hour. It can affect sugar metabolism.

  • If you eat, you will screw up the test. If you truly cannot complete the test, then I believe the protocol is to proceed as if you have a confirmed GD diagnosis.

The worst bit is the waiting around and not being able to do anything! take a book or thick magazine. oh and my nurse struggled with the last blood draw and it pinched since she had to use the vein on the outside of my elbow. My clinic does a 2 hour GD test routinely which sucks, as I passed easily.

Just like everybody else said don't eat because it will skew the numbers. For me the 2nd and 3rd hours were the worst. After they gave me the glucose drink the first hour was fine, but during the second hour I got extremely hungry and by the end of the 3rd I was a weepy mess because all I wanted to do was eat.
