Electric Pump?

Not sure if this is the best place to post this but here it goes. I am expecting next month and wish to try my best at breastfeeding. I will buy a electric pump later if I am successful for sure because I will need one when I return to work. However I have read stories in which people used the pump to help with the first weeks when it is hardest. I have a manual pump but was wanting advice on if it would be better to buy an electric right off the bat. I would like my best chances in success but do not want to waste money.

The hospital gave me one for both of my children (covered by insurance). In 2011 you had to have latch issues, in 2014 you just needed to be breastfeeding. They were both medela PISA.

  • I'd suggest looking into an electronic pump! A couple of days after delivery I was told to pump and used the medela hand pump. It works GREAT and I will keep it on hand for emergencies, but the issue is no matter how awesome it is for a manual, it still takes forever to partially empty my breasts. Once your milk comes in strong you'll need that fast and easy relief

  • If you have insurance coverage, check with them, you should be able to get a pump for free. Get a double electric, most people recommend Medela if you have a choice of different brands. It's nice to have a pump on hand in case you need extra stimulation to bring milk in (my case with BOTH my babies) but hospitals will typically provide you with a pump during hospital stay and I think you can rent it from them too.
