Isla or Ayelet?

we've been wanting a hebrew name all along, but besides Selah haven't found one we really like. Isla has also been on top of our list too..but the meaning isn't quite there. My husband came across ayelet, which has a similar sound, and a lot less popular. I don't know if I'd use it as a first or middle only??

  • I completely get what you're saying with the eyelet thing! I definitely don't want that! Ayelet is a legit name though!

it may be a legit name, but 9 out of 10 people aren't going to know that and will think you've got a thing for summer fabric, just spelled wrong.
  • I have a nephew named Eytan... It's a legitimate Hebrew name that often gets, "Akon?!" So I understand your woes... Ayelet is beautiful, but it'll be too misunderstood, I think.

  • @vvitchhazel thanks for your feedback. Most definitely could be an issue. I do love the name though
  • Just throwing out suggestions

    Adara
    Adina
    Aviva
    Eliana
    Leah
    Raziela
    Shamira
    Shoshanna
    Tamar
    Zahara
    Ziva
    Zivit
  • My husband does like Aviva and eliana, but I don't love either one : (
  • Is it pronounced like eye-let? It sounds like violet without the v and that's what I'd probably think if I heard it
  • I love Isla! Ayelet is pretty but I worry your daughter would have people spelling it wrong her whole life (think phone customer service constantly getting it wrong)
  • Isla. Legit or not, I immediately thought eyelet with the other name.
  • I am assuming Ayelet is pronounced "A-let" but judging from this post when a person is reading your daughters name they will pronounce it wrong, and if they hear the name they will spell it wrong. I know a woman named Ilette (E-let) and I always thought it was very pretty. Selah is one of my all time favorites! And Isla is very pretty but very popular right now.
  • Isla. Legit or not, the other looks weird and made up.
  • Thanks for the input
  • Isla is stunning! It's feminine yet sophisticated.

I think you'll just have to be prepared for having to spell it, pronounce it, etc. And yes, it does make me think of eyelet. If you're cool with that, go for it. Of all the names you've chosen, Selah is far and away my favorite.
