Teachers - Announcing to Students

I teach high school and I'm planning to announce my pregnancy to my students before the end of the school year. I know that I don't have to because I won't have (most) these students next year, but I want to share with them because that's the relationship I have with my students. I was wondering if any other teachers had any advice or ideas about how to make an announcement to my teens. Thanks!

Re: Teachers - Announcing to Students

  • I teach middle school and always figured it would come out eventually.  My last pregnancy was fun.  All the good kids were at an awards assembly while I was stuck with the knuckle heads.  A girl made some comment about my belly or weight that I ignored, shortly followed by "Ms. C, what have you been eating?!?!"  I then informed her, and the rest of the knuckle heads, she was lucky I was pregnant.

What do you teach.  Maybe you could make a math problem where they could figure out the cost of daycare or living expensesses with an added child and at the end tell them why you wanted to know.  If you teach English maybe write a personal narrative describing some of the changes you've gone though and have them respond with an inference as to why you're ezperiencing those changes.

  • I teach high school English. My students are really caring and we have a relationship built on sharing and trust, so it's been killing me to keep this from them. I know that I've been crankier than normal due to fatigue and constant hunger, so I wish I could just tell them to help them understand that it really isn't them. I had a miscarriage last August so I've been trying to wait until the risk drops, which should be after this week (I'm 12 weeks now). I like the inference idea; I may have to play with that.
