Shot to help baby's lungs

I'm 29+6 and I got my first shot today, I need to get a second one tomorrow but I'm freaking out a bit. I'm the kind of person that avoids medicines as much as possible, of course I'm not doing that while pregnant but I know baby's gonna move less for a couple of days and that's gonna be stressful for me, anyone who already received the shots who could tell me for how long will the baby move less? Or justs tell me your experience to help me stay relaxed. Thanks!

Re: Shot to help baby's lungs

  • Is there any reason why you're getting the shots? It's not routine where I'm at unless you're at very high risk for pre term labor.

I've had contractions since the beginning and they're already getting more frequent and more intense. I also had some bleeding at week 7 and again around week 12 and there's
something wrong with the placenta so since the beginning my dr told me I was probably gonna go into preterm labor. My due date is July 21st, but my doctor's estimate is actually the last 2 weeks of June, luckily she doesn't think the baby could come earlier! I had to take progesterone until the end of the second trimester because I don't generate anything and I stopped taking it at week 12 But had to start again (when I had bleeding, actually at week 7 I also started taking less) so basically, my doctor's only explanation is that my body rejects pregnancies. With my son it was the same and I had a MC last year.

I've had the round of steroids twice..my doc didn't mention less movement so I wasn't watching for it and really didn't notice it if there was.
  • My SIL had to drink some pills, but her pregnancy has been very bumpy this time around.. She started bleeding in 26w and dialeted 2cm, doctors weren't sure they will be able do delay preterm labor, so just in case she had to drink them. She gave birth a week ago (29w) and baby is breathing without any assistance. My little nephew was born 3.3 lbs and now he is waiting for he's cousin to arrive. Hopefully around due date 8-11 July :)
  • My Dr told me I would be getting those as well. I am due July 22nd but I have a complete complete placenta Previa and will be having a c section at 36 weeks. I wonder if I will be getting them soon?

Does anyone know what could happen if you get them and don't go into preterm? I'm wondering if they could in some way cause you to go into labor sooner ...
  • At 30 weeks I went into preterm labor and also had the steroid shots to help with lung development. I am now 30w6d and still in the hospital. I didn't notice any less fetal movement with the shots but I was told that the magnesium I was given thru IV (twice this week) could cause baby to move less because it relaxes both our muscles to lessen contractions. I was told contractions may be the 'norm' for me. Hoping I can at least hold off until June (due date is July 15).
  • I had the shots a couple weeks ago at 29w and noticed less movements for a couple days but heartbeat was really great 3 days later and now at 31 baby is back to moving like crazy. I didn't know if it was because of shots or other medication they put me on for the next couple weeks. I hate medications and have been very stressed with all the chemicals the doctors have made me take, but they assure no effects to baby and it's just making the pregnancy safer to get closest to 40 weeks. It's really stressful I know.

Usually, steroid shots are given to promote lung development. Toward the end of the pregnancy, that's when the finishing touches are made on the baby's respiratory system. Without the shots, it's possible the baby may need assistance breathing after birth
  • I had the shots over the weekend as well as magnesium via IV and I'm on oral Nifedipine now until 36 weeks. I haven't noticed a decrease in movement with the baby. I had an emergency open appendectomy Friday morning. I'm 32 weeks pregnant today. Contractions are mild now and much less frequent, hoping baby stays put for a bit longer. Docs will keep me on Meds until 36 weeks. I also dislike Meds but it's best for baby! Good luck!!
