Baby Names

Scandinavian names

We're expecting our 4th. So far, we have Britta, Anders (said like And, not Ond), and Annika (said like Ann, not Onn). We're team green and never agree!

For a girl, hubby likes Astrid, Ingrid, and Freya. I'm not a fan! I'm also fine with branching away from the Scandinavian names.

My favorite is Maaria (emphasis on the first syllable which rhymes with bar). My only beef with this name, is that I don't know how to spell it so that others will pronounce it correctly - I'm sure there will be plenty that say Maria and Mariah, but it's neither of those.

Thoughts on Maaria??
Thoughts on other names going with the sibset? We don't want common, but we don't want crazy or made up either.
MN is set: Lee.

FYI, for a boy, I like Finn, hubs likes Soren. MN is Martin.

TIA!!

Re: Scandinavian names

  • Hmm. I like Maaria, but fear it will be treated as a typo of Maria. Would Marja be a decent compromise?

    I really like Astrid.

I'm not super familiar with Scandinavian names, but I do like Sigrun and Signe.
  • What about Marria? I think that could get the pronunciation you are looking for. And btw, I think its a beautiful name

  • Marija is another spelling we've considered.

And thank you, I think Maaria/Marija Lee is beautiful as well.

I agree Maaria will be confused with Maria, but Marija reminds me too much of Marijuana. I wouldn't use either. I love Ingrid and like Freya. Astrid is pretty but I wouldn't do any more A names. I prefer Soren to Finn just because it's a little more unique and goes better with the other kids names.

  • A names are out, though that's hubby's fave. DD1 would be a little left out! Ha!

    Freya and Finn
  • My moms middle name is pronounced that way and spelled Marja, but I'm sure that spelling could confuse people too

Funny I just posted about this name on another thread. My coworker just named her baby that. But she spelled it Marrea. For what it's worth, when she sent the staff email out there was all sorts of confusion on how to say it (which I think you may run into a little with any variation of it). I heard Maria, ma-RAY-uh, and the correct way. That being said, once we figured it out we all thought it was very pretty!
  • I would nix Maaria. I LOVE how dedicated you two are to honoring your culture but this kid will be growing up in America, I'm assuming, so it might be annoying for her to have to explain it all the time, especially considering that all of your other kids have fairly straightforward names. Go with Marija Lee if you love that name. FWIW, I much prefer Freya Lee. It's such a lovely name and it fits well with your other kids. Freya sounds like a Viking warrior to me and I'm all about empowering, feminine names for girls!

Ps- I adore all of your kids names. Well done, momma!

I read the other thread first, where you mentioned Marrea, and gasped! It was before I came back to look at new posts on this one.
  • I LOVE Freya!!!
  • Do you have a Scandinavian last name? If you do, I could see the pronunciation of Maaria coming easier to people. I really like it and got the pronunciation right away.

    I really like Soren, too.
  • And IMHO Maaria looks Scandinavian whereas Marria doesn't.
  • Yes, we have a very Scandinavian last last name. Looks like it rhymes with bagle, but the 'a' says ah and it ends with lee. My son sounds like an immigrant! Ha!

I'm actually not Scandinavian, and am okay with deviating from the theme, buts hubs is and we kind of have a thing going here...

I love, love, love MARee-ya (nn MARee), but the spelling is killing me. And I don't want her to hate me for it!
  • Love Finn and Ingrid. My favorites.
