Can first ultrasound be wrong?

ok so my last period was August 21, which would make me due May 28th, but my ultrasound said I was due june 17th. I went to my drs Wednesday and told her what's going on (lots of braxton hicks, period like cramps that last for a bit, losing some mucus, lots of pressure, nausea, and lost some weight) she felt the baby and her head is super low and she said she felt bigger then 34 weeks so she's sending me for an ultrasound asap, so could my first ultrasound be wrong and I'm really due May 28th? Did this happen to anyone before?

Re: Can first ultrasound be wrong?

  • Yeah, it could be wrong. Especially if you don't know exactly when you conceived.

  • There is nothing more accurate than a first trimester ultrasound... Later ultrasounds are not accurate in dating.. They use early ultrasounds in dating over LMP
  • Anything is possible? 1st ultrasounds are pretty accurate. I guess you really will have to wait for your ultrasound. I am curious if anyone has ever been radically mis dated like that. Good luck!

  • I have the same thing going on!! My first due date according to when I found it was May 28th but my ultrasound says June 11th. My woo hoo hurts so bad this week I can barely walk, I have back labor non stop, and bh keeps coming on more and stronger. Two weeks ago I was dilated only at 1cm. I go back on Tuesday and very curious to what my doctor says! Let me know what you find out.

I'm also 34 weeks and having the same symptoms. Early ultrasounds are very accurate in determining dating. Unless you are referring to the anatomy scan.
  • I have been having this argument with my dr for months. My original due date was May 25 and got moved to June 10th. Normally, I would have no clue on conception dates but the original date makes more sense with what was going on at the time. My mom was sick and in the hospital so there wasn't any going home to try to make a baby.

Also, I would have been maybe 3 weeks pregnant when I got the strong positive on a cheap test based on the dates she gave me.
  • My cousin is a radiologist and said that if the ultrasound tech is off by even a millimeter on getting the measurements it can throw off the due date. My due date was pushed back 2 weeks by the ultrasound read, but I knew when my lmp was and so we just picked a day that was closer to that. I've been measuring along with that. But like my doctor said, the baby is going to come whenever he wants!

I get frustrated with my due date as well because I was SO anal about charting when we were trying and the very first ultrasound he said we were 5 weeks when we heard a very strong heartbeat. If you know anything medical it's very rare to hear a strong heartbeat at 5 weeks (it was transvaginal). So yeah..... But I guess in the long run they do run 2 weeks either way !!!! When your type A personality it does bother you though!
