Big Baby?

My baby is measuring two weeks ahead. My doc is ordering a 3 hour glucose test even though I passed th first with flying colors. Has anybody has experience with measuring ahead and having a normal sized baby? At 32 1/2 weeks, they determined through ultrasound she is 5 lbs. I'm now 34 weeks.

  • As has been discussed extensively, Fundal Measurements mean nothing. Idk why she re ordered your glucose test. You probably should ask her

Take those measurements with a grain of salt. I measured 4 weeks small and had an 8lb, perfectly healthy boy. Even on ultrasounds they can only get within a pound or so, which makes a huge difference. I was told I'd be lucky if DS was 6lb. Listen to your doc but try not to stress about it. I know, easier said than done. I hope everything goes well!

This kid was measuring 5 lbs at my 31 week ultrasound. My doc was not concerned. She said that they can be off by a pound either way.

  • My doc thinks this one will be ten pounds at 39 weeks when we induce and he doesn't seem the least bit concerned about it (though I'm hoping he's wrong!). My last one was 9.4 and I measured perfectly all along. With my first I measured a few weeks ahead and he was 8.4. I feel like the measurements they take don't mean a darn thing!!
  • I measured 3 weeks ahead at my last appointment and then yesterday I was only one week ahead. Babys can go through growth spurts! My MW hasn't been concerned at all.
  • 2 weeks either way by fundal height is normal... I don't know how many times they induce because of baby being "big" and then baby comes out 6 pounds.. I think they use that as their medical reason to induce it's getting ridiculous.. (Sorry vent over)
  • It sounds like they may be measuring via ultrasound (HC and AC) rather than fundal height, which might mean you have a big baby, but then maybe not! Late onset GD can happen, which is why she would be reordering your glucose tests. I had a big baby last time (4kg) but he was not measuring big. This time around baby's head is around 1-2 weeks ahead at every appointment but AC is normal as is fundal height so hopefully not a big baby. The thing to remember that when they are talking about "2 weeks ahead" that is 2 weeks ahead of a 50th percentile baby, we are not talking 1-2 kg bigger than a normal baby! So even if you do have a slightly larger baby, at 2 weeks ahead that doesn't mean he will be a whopper.
  • They did do it by ultrasound. Thank you for the responses!
