Fioricet while pregnant??

I have migraines, with or without pregnancy. EVERY day. (Maybe 3-5 days a month I won't have one.. Sometimes I get really lucky and don't have them for a week or two at a time when I'm not pregnant) anyways... With my last pregnancy I had them sooooo bad I thought I was dying! The full blown god awful migraines where I would be puking, dizzy, swirls in my eyes and flashers everywhere! They put me on reglan and then phenergan which helped a lot. Thank god this time around there nowhere near that bad. Just a daily headache up until recently. Nausea, dizziness and flashers. With a painful headache. My doctor put me on fioricet which I had been on before I got pregnant. Everything I read says it's safe to take.. But zofran was "safe" at one point as well... Has anyone else been on this while pregnant? Or know anything about it?

Re: Fioricet while pregnant??

  • I'm on it now. I only take it as needed but my OB did say it was safe. I also take verapamil with it as well to help with my migraines but I will say I can't sleep on it. It keeps me up so I only take it if I'm on the complete verge of not functioning

My doc swore it was safe as well. I just don't trust much anymore. They had me on zofran for a couple weeks only to find out that back in 2014 the FDA determined it wasn't safe to take. I'm supposed to take 2 every 4 hours, I took one and felt all fuzzy headed.. So I felt guilty for taking it. Yet amazed that I could move my head without feeling like my brain was gonna fall out.
  • I was just prescribed it for serious headaches/migraines where Tylenol wouldn't make a dent. The only thing worrisome about it is the barbiturate, but it's a relatively small amount. If it makes you feel better and function, that's probably better for the baby in the long run. If I need it, I'll take mine without hesitation. Wish I would have had it last week when I needed it!
  • Zofran is still safe to take, so don't feel too bad about that one. Plenty of Drs still prescribe it, and the warnings/risks have not changed. Of course there are lawsuits (which are being aired on tv all the time) but that is more of a scare-tactic.

Good luck with the fiorcet, trust your dr :)

  • I completely agree with Fireworks813!! Zofran is still safe to take. I'm still taking it. If one person reports a problem they have to issue those warnings and a class action lawsuit gets initiated. I used to work with an attorney who handled those lawsuits. Also I had to take Percocet for a period of about three weeks during this pregnancy for a fractured rib. I didn't like the thoughts of it but listened to my dr and trusted that they wouldn't put my baby or myself in harms way. I have struggled with migraines in the past and had to take Fioricet but not while pregnant. All I know is that I feel your pain and if your dr prescribed it, I would allow yourself some relief and take it. I know that Fioricet was the only thing to keep me functioning at one point. I hope you are feeling better soon. XoXo.
  • I am so sorry you're dealing with this, pregnant or not. I had my first migraine last Sunday (31 weeks today) and found it completely debilitating. Had I not had a dentist appointment that got me out of work early I would have had to call off. You are a strong lady! Hugs to you!
  • I was just in the hospital for a really severe migraine on Monday - Fioricet is what they gave me and sent me home with! You're good :) They also said to take 400mg a day of magnesium and 200mg twice per day of riboflavin for preventative!

  • I started having migraines in early January, and I tried everything- but nothing seemed to work... Until they gave me firocet. I think it's safe to take, but I also believe that my dr wouldn't prescribe me something that wasn't safe. He did tell me to take it as little as often, because your body gets used to it over time- which would make it less effective. I would definitely recommend taking it if you are prescribed it... It seriously saved me this pregnancy!

Thank you ladies. I have guilt over taking anything while pregnant.. Specially something that makes me feel fuzzy.. But it does help. And I only take it once a day.. Haven't had to at all today so that's pretty great!
