2nd Trimester

Miserable, Horrible congestion

so I'm 13 weeks and the past few days have been miserable. I am completely congested and can't breath out of my nose. All my glands are sensitive and my throat is on fire. I am also having trouble breathing without choking on mucus in my throat. I can't even sleep. Someone please tell me that this will wither go away soon, or that there's a fix of some kind because I'm ready for a mental breakdown.

Re: Miserable, Horrible congestion

  • Mine went away when I gave birth. A sinus rinse and Flonase helped me a little.

  • Sinus rinse. Also try Elder berry syrup if it's ok with your doctor. I started getting a sore throat and congestion and took a few doses of Elder berry syrup and I feel much better.
  • I'll ask about that! Thank you
  • A humidifier beside my bed at night helps with my nasal congestion. Also saline nasal spray when it's absolutely terrible lol. Hope it gets better soon! Mine kind of subsided a couple weeks into the 2nd trimester but it's also allergy season so it's back a little.

If it's an actual cold or sinus infection your doctor can give you safe drugs to take. They can also give you a list of safe OTC cold and allergy medicines. They're not the best or most effective stuff out there but they're better than nothing.
  • I swore by saline spray and my humidfier. I drank lots of tea. It was such a miserable time for me, I feel for you.
  • Yeah, this sucks a$$. I've been dealing with mad accelerated allergies my whole pregnancy and have been officially sick a few times (including right now). A Neti Pot helps when I'm not SO congested I can't use it. My Dr ok'd for me to take benadryl, and that helps me keep my nose fairly dry at night and as a bonus helps me sleep. Tea is good. Talk to your doctor about your situation, they should be able to steer you towards safe medications you can take and other ideas to at least help you make the best of a crummy situation. Good luck, feel better!

  • I've come down with a similar cold - or whatever it is. Otrivin nose spray is great to relieve congestion
  • A drop of peppermint oil in some steamy water and inhale.  It really help to get everything loose so I could breathe again.
  • I've had terrible sinus pressure my entire pregnancy (30 weeks today). I too try and just drink hot tea and use a warm washcloth on my sinuses. If it's really bad I've been taking Tylenol to help reduce some of the swelling and pressure but I haven't really found anything that's worked. I've just kind of dealt with it :(

Awww, I feel for you girl. I posted something similar on here in my first trimester... I went about 20 weeks with severe nasal congestion. Literally couldn't breathe. It got so bad, my OBGYN sent me to an ENT Specialist to make sure I didn't have a polyp that had been aggravated by the pregnancy hormones. I didn't. Just straight up, horrible, pregnancy induced congestion. Around week 23-24 the congestion subsided and I've thankfully been breathing much more normally the last few weeks (I'm at week 27 currently). I did alot of reading and research on it and I will tell you it's possible it could last for your entire pregnancy. Sorry sweetie! Extra soft tissues will be your best friend, drink a TON of water as it will flush your system a bit, exercise when you can (even if its a light walk around your block), and if it really gets unbearable ask your Dr to prescribe a safe nasal spray. I used the nasal spray (which did have steroid in it, so was advised not to use in excess) a few times; it didn't solve my problem but did give me a little bit of relief when I was having trouble sleeping due to the congestion. Things like the Neti Pot, did absolutely nothing to help me, unfortunately. Keep your head high and stay tough, I know it can get really hard!
  • I had the same issue. I have seasonal allergies and moved from FL to TN in November last year. I had a great system in place when my allergies got as bad as yours, but now that I Prego.... no can do! :( Before, the doctor said that when and only when my allergies and symptoms are bad, take an allergy pill every 12 hours, then also take a Sudafed from "behind the counter". It cleared up my sinuses and didn't have the drainage issues.

When I was 12 weeks pregnant I was just as miserable. There sadly isn't much they can do. The symptoms did subside after a couple days, but sadly they are now back. I like to walk outside so I blame myself for exposing myself to the pollen. I normally take Zyrtec and the doctor suggested taking Claritin for a few days and see if the change in meds helps me out. They suggested Benadryl at night, so I'll try that because my husband can't deal with the "sound effects" I make currently during my sleep.

Thanks to those who have posted suggestions. I've got a humidifier so I'm going to try that tonight and see if that helps at all.

Good luck! We're in this allergy nonsense together!! :)
