Help! Low amniotic fluid @ 22 weeks

Last week (22 weeks), I was diagnosed with very low amniotic fluid. The doctor said that the baby is small and measures 19 weeks. Her growth is restricted because she's not getting the necessary nutrients needed to thrive in the womb. She asked me to hydrate really well over the next 2 weeks and come back when I was 24 weeks to see if anything had changed.

Today at 23 weeks, I went in for a routine checkup and had another u/s. I was told that my fluid levels have decreased since last week. I don't understand, I've been drinking a gallon/day for the last week and I've had a really healthy pregnancy. There's been no sign of leaking of fluid or anything that I would consider alarming at this stage of my pregnancy.

This is my first baby and I'm terrified. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  • I don't have experience with low fluid. In my last pregnancy, my fluid was too high, and they referred me to an MFM for a better look at baby to see what was causing it. Has your OB talked about referring you up to a specialist?

  • Yes, I have been referred to a specialist and my appointment is next week. I'm just nervous about the end result. I pray for the delivery of  healthy baby.
  • You may want to check in with the high risk board, I believe I read about a few people with similar situations. I will keep you in my thoughts.
  • With my 1st I was diagnosed with low fluid around 30-33 weeks (can't remember it was 6 yrs ago!). The ultrasound at my doctors was measuring my fluid between 4-5 (normal is 10 I believe) I also didn't have any leakage or anything. I had to be admitted to the hospital a couple times for monitoring and had several ultrasounds a week to monitor and had to pay close attention to fetal movement. You may be surprised because every time I went to the specialist my fluid would be like 7 and my doctor and the hospital would be like 3-5 so I think they have higher grade ultrasound machines which are more reliable. My daughter was born at 37 weeks (induction) but she was healthy, small (5lbs3oz) but healthy! She is now graduating kindergarten in a couple weeks! Keep up your hope momma! I will keep you in my prayers as I know the feeling.
