Recommendations for "where do babies come from" questions

My 4 yr. old recently asked if it was true if babies "come out your teetee" as a classmate had told her. I explained to her using the correct terms (which is what we have always used with her) that her friend was right. I know the "how did the baby get in your belly" question will be sure to follow and am looking for an age-appropriate book that gives correct information without giving more than she needs. Any recommendations?

Re: Recommendations for "where do babies come from" questions

  • Oh goodness. :) My 6 year old recently asked me how the baby was going to get out of my tummy. He said is he going to come out of your butt?  I said no.  He said your belly button? I said no.  He trailed off and has never asked me again. My 2 yr old has said things like mamma when is the baby getting out.. he's been stuck in there forever!! but neither of them have gone farther than that.  I'm curious to hear what others answers will be! They are tough questions!

  • Good question!  I have no other children, but I teach kinder and first grade special needs kiddos.  They know I am having a baby and know it's in my belly, lol.  (Many have younger siblings and they remember their mothers being pregnant.)  I can tell a few are confused, mostly those who are only children.  Fortunately, they haven't asked too many questions.

I do have one kiddo who talks (in broken English) about the baby, unzip the belly, take baby out and zip up, lol.  I gotta admit that the first time he made the reference it really freaked me out, lol.

I only have 11 more days of teaching left, so hopefully the questions will still be lacking.

  • I told my daughter that girls eventually get a baby hole. And, God puts the baby in there. Now that she is 10, I have explained the birds and the bees. Just be age appropriate honest.
  • I don't know of any books, but my 4yo dd was happy with the "God put him there" answer or some friends have said that Mom and Dads love put the sibling in Mom's tummy. My DD has seen my c-section scar from her birth, so she correctly assumed her brother would exit there as well.

  • Oh lord! I hadn't thought about this in awhile but when my DD was born my DS was 3. Shortly after HE explained to ME how it all works ... First I swallowed her and then when she was ready I threw her up! Lovely. At the time I just said 'oh did I?' and smiled :)

Now it's more along the lines of God put the baby there ... Now we are not very religious people but we went to church as kids and DS goes to a Presbyterian preschool so it's familiar to him to hear that God is responsible. If you're more wanting to go the true scientific way ... At this age I'm stumped too! I'd love to hear others ideas! DS is 5 (6 when baby gets here) and I know he'll have more questions this time!
  • browneyes_326 lol That made me laugh out loud.  I love the way kids think. It's so funny.  I think God is a great answer actually.

I am a pediatric speech therapist and with my first pregnancy one of my little patients asked why my shirt kept moving (baby was very active). I told him because I had a baby in there. He got this horrified look on his face and said, "did you eat him?" Lol. At least my daughter hasn't thought I ate her sister yet. The God answer is good, hopefully she will be satisfied with that for now, but I think I will still need something more. Last month she was asking why people die and if everyone was going to die, etc and going to Heaven answer didn't appease her. She loves the photos of the babies in the Mayo Clinic Pregnancy book (which I had showed her to explain why baby wasn't big enough to come out to play) and they study life cycles of animals at school, so I am hoping to find something similar but for little kids just in case she needs more info I don't get caught fumbling.
