Oysters?

I just went out and had two dozen oysters and after-the-fact I told the waiter I was pregnant and she commented that I should not have eaten oysters!?! Should I be worried? They were cooked

Eating it raw does not necessarily effect the baby. It's the bacteria that raw may carry that can be a huge problem. Cooked is fine, raw is a bad idea.

  • Oh geeze. I'd be in for a world of hurt if eating cooked oysters was a problem during pregnancy. They're totally fine, just like pretty much everything else that's cooked. Cooking kills the bacteria that might be in them.

I'm planning on eating piles of oysters next month when we camp at the beach. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't have any.
  • Down in Louisiana we eat fried oysters while pregnant. I've never had an issue and my doctor has always said that cooked is fine.
  • I agree with PPs cooked is 100% okay raw is a risk. I eat raw (low merc) fish but I won't do raw oysters while pregnant.
  • Thanks ladies, I almost went to the doctors I was so nervous. People are so freaking rediculas with there dang two cents!

I'm just amazed that oysters sounded appealing! I can't imagine not gagging on one right now.
  • This is the same with sushi. They recommend you don't eat them raw but if the place you get them from is reputable and you know the quality is fresh, now and then won't hurt you. Like others have said, you are more likely to get listeria from improperly washed fruits and veggies. Cooked is safe! I'm from Louisiana and have been craving some jacked up oysters!!!

  • Louisiana here also. This is #5 pregnancy for me and I had semi cooked oysters and all my babies were fine. I think pregnant or not there is a risk when consuming raw shellfish. The risk is low but it's still a risk that ob/gyn are not wanting us pregos to take ;)
