TTC after 35

Clomid

edited May 2015 in TTC after 35

I’m 38, been TTC since August 2014.  Wasn’t having my period so ultimately we found
out that I have hypothyroidism.  I was
given the go ahead by my endocrinologist and still didn’t get pregnant.  Doctor started me on progesterone, 2 rounds
of birth control and then clomid.  The
way everything is timed out we will be trying again in early July.  I’m specifically curious about the clomid especially because of our age (i've heard that increases chances of multiples in of itself). ??  I’m worried
about multiples.  My doctor says she's seen twins from clomid about 3% of the time.  Just wondering about
others' experience with it.  Thanks ladies!

Hi!  Welcome to the board.  I have some experience with Clomid - I got pregnant with my daughter on my first round a couple years ago.  The side effects are kind of brutal.  I had headaches (but I get that with all fertility meds), significant cramping - I FELT myself ovulating, and I was quite rage-y.

May I ask if you're seeing a RE / fertility specialist?  I only ask because I'm wondering if you're going to be monitored with ultrasounds throughout your cycle.  If you're doing this with your OB, they usually don't do monitoring.  That makes me nervous with Clomid because:

    (1) multiples - without ultrasound, you could be having sex with several mature follicles and you could end up with more than twins

    (2) Clomid causes cysts and if you continue to do Clomid month after month without checking, you could have a really bad situation on your hands from ovarian cysts

    (3) Clomid can really thin your lining, which I have personal experience with.  Luckily, I was working with a RE and he put me on medications to help thicken that lining and she stuck

Let me know if you have any other questions.  My Clomid experience is a few years old and I've moved on to the bigger guns at this point, but I remember it well!  :)  Good luck!

  • No RE, this is through my OB.  I'm only trying one cycle of this.  If it doesn't work, we've decided it's not meant to be.  My insurance does not cover infertility and the health consequences are
other reasons I don't want to force this past the one try of clomid.  We both have older children from previous marriages.  Thanks for letting me know any details like that, it is helpful to me just knowing what to expect and of course the doctor doesn't tell you those things.
  • I did my first round of Clomid a couple of weeks ago. No headaches, no rage, no moodiness, and no weepiness. The only side effect I had was crazy, vivid dreams and some insomnia. I ended up with two mature follicles at ovulation and didn't think twice about doing an IUI.
  • Clomid works differently for everyone. Just like everything else. Personally I was on Clomid for 4 months I had slight headaches as side effects but nothing too crazy. Unfortunately, I did not conceive in those months that I was taking it either. However, it was prescribed to me by my OBGYN and he had monitored me to see if it was doing it's job.
