White noise scare

So we've been using white noise since our LO was a newborn as a way to calm him, per the Happiest Baby on the Block (which our pediatrician recommends). We have mostly played white noise on our home speakers and on our iPad, but lately it dawned on me — could this be hurting LO's ears?? I've actually started turning it way down and am wondering if others have used white noise and/or talked to their doctors about it? Ours never mentioned anything about it, other than recommending the calming techniques from that book.

Re: White noise scare

  • I've wondered that too. LO seems to love the noise but I was afraid of the loudness. From what I've read it can be as loud but no louder than a shower is when you're in the bathroom. Also it shouldn't be right next to their head, obviously.

We have a pretty loud a/c so I just turn it up to where it matches that noise so he can't tell the difference when the air is on and off. Many times I leave his room wondering if I should turn it down more, but I feel like he'd let me know if it was uncomfortably loud.

  • I have mine on the lowest setting and it's across the room.  however, my LO doesn't seem to mind my other DD screaming all day as she runs around the house and that's more ear splitting than the air purifier we use lol
