Accidentally ate cold pepperoni!!

So... not thinking, I made Italian pasta salad last night and cut up a bag of pepperoni and put it in there. At 4 o'clock in the morning when I woke up because my mouth was so dry I couldn't breath (seperate issue)... I was thinking about it and for whatever reason realized the pepperoni is a cured meat and I probably should not be eating it while pregnant. Then to make things "better" I googled it...ugggh. Would it be absolutely insane of me to call my doctor? I'm 11 weeks and kind of freaking out..never should have googled it..always makes things worse!!

  • You can't eat pepperoni when your pregnant? Or is it the uncooked aspect of it?
  • Uncooked. Cured meat is said to be less "of a risk" if it's warmed
  • I think there are actual legitimate risks for pregnant women when it comes to food.... But I don't think this is one of them.
  • You will be completely fine. I wouldn't make a habit of eating cold pepperoni while pregnant but I'm sure everything is okay.

  • Cold deli meat carries a listeria risk, so we ate told to avoid it. No one says to avoid spinach, hummus, or ice cream, which have all had recalls because of listeria.

I eat deli meat on cold sandwiches while pregnant. I'm careful about refrigeration.

  • I know I sound like a nut..but it's our first baby, and DH and I are already over the moon and so in love with this baby!! I would just never forgive myself if something awful happened because of a silly mistake. I'm trying to find that balance between being aware, but enjoying my pregnancy..I just need to stop worrying so much!!
  • If it was packaged in a bag, I wouldn't worry. What worries me is cold cuts that sit out in a case that workers are opening and closing and the temperature isn't constant. That's when bacteria runs rampant.

You don't sound like a nut at all. ;) It's totally normal to worry about these kind of things especially when google is filled with such bad information.

  • I ate pepperoni al the time right before I peed on the stick and baby is fine! Don't stress about it!
  • I eat pepperoni all the time.. Even now. There isn't anything to be worried about. Just make sure you read expiration dates and stuff.

  • Don't eat cold pepperoni that you purchased from a convenient store that's been sitting, wrapped loosely in plastic wrap for an undefined amount of time in an open refrigerator that has questionably consistent cooling after being prepared by a less that concerned underpaid worker who thinks that hygiene means brushing his hands off on his dirty jeans before touching food. :)

    Otherwise you're just fine.

  • I totally did this but with salami, i'm a salami freak and don't know how i'm going to live without it! I'm sure you'll be fine. You're 11 weeks so pretty far along :)
  • On that same note... what do you guys think about the deli meat you get freshly sliced at the deli counter... like off of the big chunk of turkey - same risk? Or is the risk in packaged meat?
  • My opinion is I think deli meat from a large chain grocery store is fine if you eat it within a week. The grocery stores have good handeling practices. If they didn't they wouldn't be in business. If they had listeria cases you'd know about it. Same thing with subway. If subway had one listeria case they wouldn't be in business! Well they probably would but you'd hear about it all over the news.

I'd be way more worried about mom & pop places or small time sandwich shops.

I think the lettuce at some of these places is way more likely to have listeria than deli meat.

  • I used to work in a small town deli and I will not eat their food while I'm pregnant! Let's just say not everyone is concerned about the meat. I wouldn't even eat the cheese because it's cut on the same slicer as the meat.! Good luck with your deli meat cravings ladies!
  • My husband and I are expecting our second child. My doctor had no problem with me eating cold lunch meat during my first pregnancy. The main concern with cold lunch meat is listeria. The last listeria breakout was in hummus and before that cantaloupe. I had several times when I ate cold lunch meat and my son is absolutely fine (now 20 months).
