Seeing midwife, not OBGYN. Who do I see when I'm sick?

I've been going to a birthing center for my prenatal care and I've loved it so far.  I'm 4 months along.  I have really bad allergies and feel like I need a breathing treatment (which happens every year, nothing new for me.)  When I called my primary care physician, they said they wouldn't treat me because I was pregnant.  They suggested urgent care or the ER.  Is this a normal problem?  Where do people who are using midwifes go when they need medical treatment?  This also happened to me at a Walgreen's clinic when I was in my first trimester and had a sinus infection.

call your midwife and see if they can recommend a PCP.  I worked in an urgent care and it was not unusual for us to forward pregnant patients to the ER (we didn't want the liability).  It's the same even if you're seeing an OB, either people are comfortable to treat a pregnant woman or they aren't.  Your midwife might know an ND or MD who is happy and able.
