how do i find a good speech therapist in my neighborhood?

My 2.5 year old just recently started stuttering.  We just had a new baby and I thought that contributed to it.  I talked to our ped and he said it's probably just a phase but if it continues I should seek help.  It's been a month now and he has good days and bad days.  I think it's bothering me more than anyone.  When I think about talking to someone and getting help, I start to feel better so I think it might be time to seek out some professional advice.  I just don't know how to go about it.  And of course to find someone really good.  Any suggestions?  Has anyone gone through something like this?

  • Are you in any local mom groups for your town that you could ask?  We lucked out with the speech therapist. We got a recommendation from someone in the town, and there was a speech therapist that was opening an office.  My daughter has gone to the speech therapist for a year.  It is mostly covered by our primary insurance. But we also have secondary insurance for her through DSHS (the state) that covers what the primary insurance does not cover.

We also went to the school district, and they have been sending somone out to evaluate our daughter for speech delay.  She is about to turn 3 years old, and she will qualify for a developmental preschool through the school district that she can start when she turns 3 years old.

  • I'm in VA and we have a state run program called early intervention. See if your state offers it and contact them. With my first son, I initiated the call, they came out and assessed him and deemed him eligible for speech therapy, they came to my home once a month for a year. It's income based and anyone is eligible. With my second son his dr contact early intervention because she was concerned. He did speech therapy for 6 months at my house. It was worth it!

  • We received a referral from my son's pediatrician at his 18 month well visit. We had the option to be referred elsewhere if we didn't like his first speech therapist. We live in TN and there is also an early intervention through the state. You might have something along the same lines, too!
