What do you do to pass the time?

I'm going crazy over here! I'm one of the most impatient people ever, and am having the hardest time waiting for LO to arrive. It's pretty much all I think of now, and I know that's not healthy. Summer is coming, which means I have fewer students so I'm not working as much and that is definitely not helping. I have plenty of hobbies, but none of them seem fun right now. So, what are you doing to pass the time? I heard these last weeks can be miserable waiting, so I'm hoping we can all benefit from this.

Some of my hobbies include:
Puzzles
Playing piano
Baking (and then eating)
Video games
And scrapbooking

Re: What do you do to pass the time?

  • Well, most of my time is spent doing schoolwork, but now that I'm on my short break before summer semester starts, I'm taking the time to catch up on getting things ready for LO (probably not helpful to you in your quest to find non-baby related activities!) and to finally read for fun again. You'd think that in library school you'd be reading a lot.. well, I do, but, with the exception of my Resources for Young Adults course, all of my reading has been super dry and boring! I miss my "fun" books soooo much! The other thing I do a lot of is watch Netflix... and I'm hoping to start going on walks again with DH one of these days. Hopefully next week, weather permitting.

  • I'm on leave and also need something to pass the time.... I do not have Netflix .... I'm the only one in the world I think. Lol
  • I planned the weekends leading up to the birth to have one baby related task to complete to make me feel busier and help the time pass :) Other than that, DH and I have been watching Friends on Netflix and doing house/yard work. I've also been doing some DIY projects on Pinterest, trying out new recipes, walking my dogs. We've had a few garage sales pop up in our neighbor hood, so I stroll through those for fun!

Other wise it's always worth it to see what's going on in your community! I work at a salon/spa and we are always hosting events offering highly discounted (sometimes even free!) spa services to bring in new guests! A great way to get some pampering on the cheap before LO is here :)
  • @Steph0727 I miss living in a town big enough to go garage saleing!!!!! I love other ppls junk!
  • I'm lucky to have busy weekends leading up to the due date. Baby showers, bridal showers, a wedding. During the week nights we prepare for baby. But work is difficult to get through.

i usually sleep for 12 hours, go to work and then come home and watch some tv with DH on the computer. we dont have netflix either we just use a streaming site: watch-series-tv .to (no spaces) just make sure you have an ad blocker. it keeps changing the .whatever but if you google "watch series" it shows up right away
  • My off time includes catching up on Game of Thrones with DH (We just started last week and we're hooked!), sleeping, and finding ideas for the nursery and home on pinterest :)
  • Unfortunately I don't like watching tv or movies (I know, I'm weird), so I can't use that as a distraction. Glad it works for other people though. Seems really effective if you like tv.

  • Playing a good board game with friends or family takes my mind off the baby for a few hours. Social activities where my pregnancy isn't the focus are good. If I'm alone I tend to read this board and look up pregnancy related stuff online way too much. I try to remind myself what kind of person I was before I got pregnant and recapture that so I won't be thinking about the baby all the time. For example, I reread some old favorite books and revisited a video game I played a few years ago, to recapture that pre-pregnant feeling.
  • Work! Working full time nights leaves not much time for life otherwise. On my weekends off (every other) we've been house hunting. Having about 2 more weekends off before baby is due and one is my shower means time will fly. Can't wait for it to be mid May and my panic to really set in. Hope you guys home on bed rest or just on leave find something to occupy your time!

  • I actually had this problem first trimester, when living in a sleepy town.  I couldn't even read or watch anything (movies or tv).  I was driving myself nuts.

What has helped me is making lots of social plans.  I also signed up for a class, which has homework.  Perhaps hosting a puzzle night once a week, and a games night another day would be something fun, and a good distraction.  You might also volunteer somewhere (walk shelter dogs?) or participate in some type of baking exchange or donation.  Bring cookies to a nursing home, etc.

People told me to "just enjoy the time" and it made me want to stab myself with a spoon.  Hopefully you find something that can take your mind off it it a bit, I know the feeling.  Good luck!

  • Shopping :( I'm so bored during the afternoons. I only work two days a week, and they are evening shifts. I've been doing a lot of shopping, and nesting. I'm not sure how many times I can organize and reorganize LO nursery. On my nights off, DH is addicted to Breaking Bad on Netflix, so I lay on the couch next to him and Pinterest. It usually just makes me hungry.

here is an idea that you could do which could help save money in the long run, if you have multiple grocery stores that you visit, check prices between all of them and just log where you can get certain items cheapest (ex: at our closest grocery store laundry soap is $4 more than an clothing/general goods store) it is something you can just do when you go shopping.

and you could always make some freezer meals so you'll have easy meals once your LO is born
  • I like to knit and garden. So I've got some stuff knitted for lo, three awesome hats so far. I'm going to start working on a baby sweater here very soon. I watch way too much tv but can knit at the same time, as far as gardening I have everything planted so I just go and check make sure everything is sprouting. I also am pretty crafty so I'm making a no sew tie fleece blanket, I have some burp cloths I'm going to make and ideally a quilt, although my first quilt totally sucked. I also enjoy cooking and the lego games for Xbox currently I'm playing lord of the rings. And it's pretty fun you get to smash stuff which I think helps with anxiety. Lol if you are interested in learning how to knit there are great vids on youtube. And local knitting groups you can join. Pretty much any knitter will take the time to show you. It's our way.
