Does the name Anastasia have a bad connotation?

I love the sound of Anastasia. My husband does too. He loves the nickname Ana. I love Staci. We really like everything about it...except one thing. That stupid 50 shades of grey book has "Anastasia" as the main character. Vote below to tell me if you think that will be associated with this name choice.

Sorry, but Anastasia Steele comes to mind right away. Skip it.

We'll remember that was the character, but we won't think that's why you picked it.

  • I think it's a pretty name, @sammid80six :) and you could do "Ana" or "Stasi" as nickname options too.

  • I'm having this same problem! If it's a girl, Anastasia is definitely in the running but I don't want people thinking that's why I picked it. Ugh, stupid popular books ;)

Never read it nor saw it and don't plan to. I thought of the Russian princess Anastasia though. I used to read fantasy books when I was a teen. You know the show The Vampire Diaries? That was a book series long before it was a tv show. My oldest is named Elaina (main character of TVD is Elena) and only because I read it in a book and remembered I liked the name. She's not named after a girl in a vampiric love triangle lol. No one has ever seemed to make any connection.

Fast forward to my second son's birth. We named him Silas. Immediately everyone started calling him Uncle Si! No offense to the Robertsons but I didn't name my child after your redneck, crazy uncle. I told everyone to stop that and they did. We picked out the name before we ever saw the show! PS I like Uncle Si as we did see the show eventually but still didn't name my son because of DD.

Name for this baby is also one I read in a book long ago. Inspiration is all around us.

Use it if you love it. Sounds like you'll be calling her by some cute nicknames so most people wouldn't ever know or make any connection. If they did just nip it in the bud.

  • I also thought of the animated movie Anastasia and even though she was animated she was very pretty and the movie was good. So for me Anastasia is a good name!
  • I don't think it has a bad connotation and I didn't think of 50 Shades of Grey either but I've never read the book or watched the movie. It actually reminds me of the animated movie like PPs said.
  • I may be a minority but I thought 50 Shades was a poorly written book and will not pass the test of time. If your last name was actually Steele, I might stay away from it. Otherwise I think it's beautiful and shouldn't let a crappy fad novel ruin your name choice!

  • I also thought of only Anastasia Romanov and the animated Disney movie. Nobody take offense to this if you super-love 50 Shades of Grey, but I didn't read it or see it, but I can say that it was a poorly written fad book (nobody loved it for its literary merit anyways right?), and it'll fall into oblivion soon. I think it'd be odd for someone to name their child after a character from it, but people are weird haha, so the only thing I'd say is get ready for the slight potential of other Anastasia's running around because of it. Regardless, I think it's a lovely name (:
  • I as well thought of Anastasia Romanov, and the animated movie. I love the name and it was on my list before we found the name we're going to use.
  • My grandma's name was Anastasia so I always think of her even though it never met her :) I think it's a lovely name and it will definitely be in my top 3 if I ever have a little girl. Im trying to think of what nick names people gave her name, we are mexican so it might be a cultural thing, but I believe the nicknames where something like Tacha or Nacha. That's going to bug me now, I'll have to ask my aunt.
  • That was almost my name, my dad put his foot down. Personally I'm glad I was not named that. Just my opinion. But I never thought about 50 shades.

  • The only thing that came to mind was the Disney movie from the 90's. It's not that uncommon of a name where people would assume you got from a book (like katniss from hunger games) so I'd go for it!
  • Thought of the Disney Anastasia only. I still have the movie in VHS.
  • I only thought of the Disney movie as well! And I've read and seen 50.
  • I had no idea it was the main character name in the book. I only thought of the animated movie Anastasia.
  • I agree that that the series is not popular enough to stand the test of time. Few people think of it now and I bet nobody will in a few years
  • her nickname could also be Anya. That's the actual nickname in Russian. My whole family calls me Anya ;)
