ULTRASOUNDS

How many have y'all had? My hospital only does 2. (Army hospital) I have paid for an extra out of pocket. So I've had 3 total. I am wanting to pay out of pocket for a 4th... Yes I have asked my Doctor she said I could have another and I do trust her I'm just curious to know how many other people get!

Thanks in advance!

P.S I did search for this question already and didn't see it which is why I started a new post!

Re: ULTRASOUNDS

  • I was supposed to only have two...but then with my GD diagnosis, I have had one more and have another next week to check on growth. Not sure if I will have another later?

  • I had one at 10 weeks, the AS at 20 weeks and will get one more at 36 weeks to make sure baby is getting into position.
  • I have had 6,4 since March. And I will have 2 more for a total of 8. 2 will be to check on movement, heart, and lungs. 3 are with a specialist checking on fluid in the brain. Honestly I find it a bit ridiculous and definitely expensive. And no I am not saying I don't care about my baby it's just what they are checking you can't do anything about it, or know the true severity till after birth.
Count yourself lucky that you don't need them all the time. My last one will cost 650, with insurance.
  • 6 weeks / 13 weeks / 23 weeks / 32 weeks. And again at 38 :)
  • I think 2-3 is pretty common unless you have complications like GD, preterm labor, multiples or other complications like that.
  • I've had 3, that's all my hospital does unless there are complications. I'd love to have more, however our last ultrasound tech was terrible. She hardly said anything while I couldn't see the screen so I was left with terrible thoughts like "is my baby even alive?" Scary thing for a first time mom. Only thing that kept me from freaking was my fiance seemed calm.
  • I've had quite a few. One at four weeks, then another at five weeks because at four weeks there was nothing to see really and they couldn't date my pregnancy at that point. One at 12 weeks for the NT scan. One at 18 weeks for fetal survey. One at 22 weeks to check if the placenta moved up and to check baby's growth. One at 28 weeks as a follow up. One at 32 weeks for a biophysical profile of the baby. I have one scheduled for 36 weeks and I think that will probably be my last one.
  • I thought having 2 was the norm for healthy pregnancies. 8 weeks to confirm baby & an AS around 20 weeks. At least that's all I've had.

Is there a particular reason you want a fourth? I know some ladies like to have a 3D ultrasound done but I believe the cut off is somewhere around 30-32 weeks due to the baby being pretty squished in there.

  • I've had one every 4 weeks since I found out I was pregnant. Mainly because of my prior surgery to make sure growth is regular. I'm happy that I've been able to see him so much.
  • I've had a very healthy pregnancy, I just wanted to see him again! Wasn't sure if most people had more or not. I'm glad to hear that 2 is the norm!
  • I've had quite a few. 6/10/12/16/19/28 weeks in the states and I've just moved to Germany where I've heard they do ultrasounds at every appointment. I have my first visit today so we will see.
  • Anywhere from 1-4 is normal for a complication free pregnancy. The only mandatory one is the anatomy scan around 20w. I also had a dating scan at 8w, NT scan at 12w, and would have just had a scan to check position at 36w, but I had an extra one at 26w because my fundal measurement was high (everything was fine).
  • I've had 2 during the course of what's so far been considered a normal pregnancy - 8 weeks and 20 weeks.
  • I've had one at 6 weeks / 12 weeks / 20 weeks / 28 weeks / 34 weeks. I have a large fibroid they keep checking.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I had one at 12 weeks, one at 20 and I have another one Tuesday, I am 32 weeks. I have another one because I was in labor and delivery all day yesterday having contractions. They just want to check on her fluid levels and a few other things.
  • I've had 4 so far. I am high risk and will have one a week, plus 2 NST/wk starting at 32 weeks, and I'll have a C section at 39 weeks, so I'll get many. It's all covered for me by insurance because of my high risk needs. (GD)

  • I have had a whopping 38 ultrasounds this pregnancy as follows:
-1 at 6 weeks to check for twins since I was on clomid
-1 at 8 weeks as follow up to hear the heartbeat
-1 at 12 weeks for NT test
-1 at 20 weeks for anatomy scan
-1 at 21 weeks due to bleeding
-33 ultrasounds as BPPs since being admitted on 3/23 (we stopped doing daily and switched to M/W/F this week). I was worried about this but MFM doctors told me not to worry since they are medically indicated and short.

Let me tell you, I wish we could have been a normal pregnancy - one without bleeding, low amniotic fluid, etc - and only had 2-3 ultrasounds the whole time. But it wasn't in the cards for us.
  • I've had 3. Dating at 6 weeks, NT at 11 weeks and anatomy at 19 weeks. Dr said I will probably have one later to check on size and position. Our US tech is kind of an idiot so all of our photos have sucked anyway. I may ask for the dr to do the next one.
  • One. The anatomy scan. I agree with those saying why not just wait at this point? I was looking at the 18-week profile just yesterday and getting excited at how much he's probably changed. It will be so amazing to see them in person!

p.s. I may get 2 if the midwives can't tell the position and need to check. But at this point they know he's head-down so nothing is scheduled.

Am i the only one who isn't DYING for more ultrasounds?  I feel like the early ones at 8, 12, and 20 weeks were super important to me, because i couldn't feel her moving around yet, and i wanted to know that everything was ok.  But now that i feel her moving every couple of hours, and i know she's doing well in there, i'd rather just wait to see her face when she comes out i think.  i don't want to ruin the surprise. :-)

Most of us aren't DYING for another ultrasound. I'm totally content waiting my last 7 weeks. We have multiple for a medical reason.
  • I will have had a lot, since I'm overweight and it's the only way to check growth. Plus the MFM wants to start weekly biophysical monitoring next month to ensure the baby is doing fine and not under any stress in there. But honestly, besides the incident last week with my blood pressure and a slightly too low thyroid function, this has been a textbook pregnancy. I definitely feel like my doctors are just being overly cautious at this point and my HSA is weeping at the couple hundred bucks I have to shell out for each scan. I'm perfectly happy with the NST's my regular OB runs. I enjoy listening to the heartbeat, hiccups and movement, I don't really need to see it. At least I know I'll be meeting my deductible before delivery!

  • I admit to being totally curious as to what the girly in my tummy looks like; however, I don't really see why you'd pay for multiple extra ultrasounds. For medical reasons, definitely; just for fun, seems like a waste of valuable money when that money could (should?) be spent on other goodies for Baby. Maybe that's just me, though...

  • I'm perfectly fine with waiting to meet him in person! Was just wondering what the norm was! Also, God willing my husband will be here for the birth but we just don't know what day our son will arrive and my husband is set to deploy possibly before my due date. So yes another would be nice so that he could see him again but we have decided not to get another and are just praying he's here for the birth! :)
  • I've had 11 ultrasounds, I'm having a twins so it's standard but I've been falling asleep during the last few haha. I would pay for one if I didn't have so many, no one can tell you what to do with your money and what is a waste to someone is valuable to another person. There are places in my city that charge $60.00 for an ultrasound- if you want one, go for it. Your body, your baby, your money. Hopefully baby is cooperative for you because it would be annoying to pay and have a sleeping Kid or a nice view of their back.
  • I've had 4, but I was only supposed to have 1. Anatomy scan at 20 weeks, ultrasound at 22 weeks because we didn't get any good pictures of his head the first time, ultrasound at 32 weeks for growth because my fundal height was low, and an ultrasound at 33 weeks at the hospital because I fell on my belly at work. So basically, if you're not having a ton, it's a good thing!
  • I have GD so I get them every 4 weeks, now because of the gd I also have to get an nst weekly with a BPP so I'm getting them weekly from here on through for the bpp. It's actually starting to get annoying how much I have to see the drs.

  • Tomorrow makes #6 for me. I had my initial ultrasound, and the anatomic ultrasound. And then 3 others were due to complications surrounding low lying placenta & vaginal bleeding. Tomorrow mornings ultrasound which makes #6 is to check for blood vessels over my cervix from the LLP. And I was told "We're sure since the LLP shifted up, there aren't any vessels...but we do this JUST to be sure". For me, they're wasting my time because she looked at that during my 5th ultrasound & said she didn't see anything concerning....oh well. Better safe than sorry, I suppose. Plus, I'm excited to see our little nugget again with only 5+ weeks to go. Eeeeek!

Some ppl make enough money for everything baby plus extra ultrasounds.
