3rd Trimester

spilling sugar

im 32 wks pregnant and found out around 26 I had kidney stones and hydronephrosis. In my previous pregnancy I spilled protien and had preeclampsia but never sugar and never had any true kidney issues. This pregnancy has been all about the urinary issues. So the past few weeks I have been spilling sugar in my urine, the docs haven't been too worried about it..I work for a doc office and tested my urine yesterday because it felt like I was getting a uti or infection, well I had more sugar in my urine..called the doc office and told them about it, they asked what I had for lunch and all I had was hamburger and fries, I'm not drinking any sugary drinks bc of all my kidney issues, I'm sticking only to water. Just wonderring if anyone else has had this issue..I passed my glucola test at 24 wks with great results, they want me to redo tomorrow to check again..just unsure what this could mean. I did find out last week that my baby boy already weighed around 4.5lbs at 31 wks gestation. Someone help this rambling mom please!!

Re: spilling sugar

  • I don't have any experience in this situation but wanted to let you know that ultrasounds for weight are notorious for being off by a lot so don't be worried you might be having a giant baby.

We can't help you any more than your provider can. I'm not sure how you can expect non-medical internet strangers to be able to answer any of these questions.

  • It means that they are thinking you might have gestational diabetes. Do not worry though because I have it and it is diet controlled. It isn't just sugary things but carbs too that can cause the extra sugar in your urine. I didn't have it with my first, but I did have some sugar spilling over at times. This time its full blown gestational diabetes. It can cause larger babies, but those ultrasounds can be off. My baby is measuring larger at the moment and I am trying not to take it too seriously. I mean, I am taking it seriously but I am not freaking out about it.

The fact that you passed your first test is good, but it could have waited later to show up.

I'm with Pp, do you have GD? And have they tested you for it again since you've shown sugar in your urine, despite not intaking an excess of sugar? I've been diabetic pretty much my whole life so I'm very familiar with it. When you have sugar in your urine, it's called ketones. Having the sugar spill over in your urine, means your blood sugar is high (well higher than normal!) and can cause you to feel yucky, and definitely isn't good for you. I would notify your doctor if you're having any changes in your symptoms.
  • Yea I'd do the glucose tolerance test again just to see. I did my glucose screen at 26 weeks and I barely failed it (by 0.1 ! ) and by the time I did my tolerance test at 27 weeks, I failed the one hour by a lot. I'm wondering if maybe 24 weeks was just a smidge too early for your test. I think GD usually just starts around then .
Anyhow , it's not just sugary stuff that can cause the high glucose. It's also carbs. Thus, your Burger and fries could have caused a spike and spilled into your urine. Now don't get me wrong, with GD you cannot cut out carbs all together bc well the baby does need some glucose but Unfortunately with gD our bodies just give the baby too much bc our pancreas' decided it just wasn't up for the extra demand.
Anyway, maybe until your test you should look up a GD diet and see if cutting down the carbs and increasing protien and veg helps your issues.

Carbs are worse because they're a slow burn, but it takes your blood sugar to be in excess of 300+ to start spilling.
  • I'm thinking u probably have gestational diabetes. I'd get that checked!
